Just wanted to throw this out there. My Mini is an '04 with 25,000 miles. I figured it wouldn't put out much smoke, but I was wrong. http://youtu.be/WWlAm7nzVK4?hd=1
this may be a foolish question but is it possible that the smoking everyone is seeing is actually just the seafoam burning out and doesnt have to do with carbon removal etc?
In this case, that's what it was (for the most part). At some points the smoke is darker. That's the carbon being removed. Most of that was just seafoam burning up.
When you get a lot of carbon out, the smoke is a lot darker/thicker.
I've got a can of Deep Creep that I'm going to use on my Wifey's 03 MCS. It has 94K miles on it and it has probably never been cleaned. Would you recommend changing spark plugs after running the SeaFoam? I was going to do it at 100K, along with the oil change and just wanted to know everyone's input on this.
no your spark plugs are fine. You can change them when you hit 100k and do your oil.
This is just a suggestion, just my 2cents.. while you have the bonnet up you can change out parts that need to be changed out also. Take a look at air filter if it needs to be cleaned. maybe new plug wires if they need to go. a brake flush. coolant flush. check the trans fluid. Cabin air filter, etc...
I am planning on putting a CAI on it very soon, so that will take care of the air filter. I plan on flushing the radiator, replacing the spark plugs, cabin air filter, and checking the transmission fluid also. My mechanic is giving it a good once-over tomorrow morning so I know if there is anything else to look at.
The plug wires and coil were just changed out to an MSD Ignition set before we bought it and they look brand new, so that will save me a bit. And we are going to put a 15% pulley on it with a new belt soon, so that will replace the serpentine belt also.
Since I'm going to be replacing the alternator on my girlfriend's '05 later today, I'm going to grab a can of Seafoam and see what happens, since I'll be under the hood anyhow. I'm expecting amazing results, since in just under 6 years, she's knocking on the 200k (yes, two-hundred thousand) mile door already. Her car hasn't been this thoroughly taken care of before we got together a little over 2 years ago, so I'm thinking it'll be impressive.
I'd snag a video of it, if I had any recording equipment (other than my laptop's webcam...).
If I like the results, I'm going to do my truck ('86 Silverado with a very nicely modded 350...THAT should be fun!).
with a car with that many miles i am sorry to say but one can wont cut it. i would look to be getting around 3-4 to get a thorough job, this is just my opinion.. but if you plan on using more than one can follow the guides on here and repeat. don't just run through can after can. Make sure you stop about a 15-30mins after each can.
Sorry to bring it back up after nearly a month (I'm not on here that frequently...), but I did 1/3-half a can, and holy crap! There was a HUGE cloud of smoke, and it kept smoking for a while while driving it. I blew most of it out, then took it for an Italian tune-up. The performance was just incredible after that. After a few days, though, it's gone back to its old ways. You were right, jimzbobs. I'm going to run the rest through, most likely tomorrow, then beat it out to my dad's house (about 16 miles each way) and see how it does.
It's just ridiculous how sluggish it is. It's like it's tied to a building when you take off...when you're already moving, it's not bad, but from a dead stop? Fugeddaboudit.
I'm also thinking, possiblymaybe, since the car has so many miles (mainly highway, actually) it could be something with the cat. There are no emissions laws in SC, so I was thinking of de-clawing it. Before doing something so drastic, I'm going to Seafoam it some more and see what that does.
As of today, it's got just over 172k. It'll be a sad day when it dies. I love driving that thing, when she lets me (rarely!), and it's such a change from my huge truck.
Hi guys, new to the mini world so I was trying to find the PCV thing on this car. I've heard of using seafoam in the PCV on Chevy's before, but I was finally going to try it on my new (used) Mini.
I went to the dealership by my house to get a new key, and the head tech assured me that seafoam is good stuff and it's okay to use in the mini.
He cautioned me about doing an underdrive pulley since the SC is about $6300 and covered under the emissions warranty way past the factory warranty. Also, according to him, the pulley is supposed to be cut off and when people replace them, they are usually installed crooked, causing all kinds of problems.
That being said, I'm going to try doing mine in the morning and see what happens. It seems to run just fine as it is, with no low RPM problems whatsoever. I'll share if I run into any snags. Thanks for the info everyone.
I did my 04 Yesterday, used almost a half can, andlet it then sit for 30 minutes or so, maybe a bit longer. had to crank the car twice and it ran rough for a minute or so, coasted down my block as i am on a big hill and you would think it was a Battleship making smoke, kids a few blocks down when I past thought I was on fire. It was very funny actually. Did not throw any codes, drove the car for 30 minutes on the highway, cant say i feel any difference in how it runs, I have 82K on it mostly highway so maybe it was not that dirty. I will give it another round next weekend when I get home.

I just did my 75,000-mile 2006 'S' a few days ago. 1/3 of a can into the PCV hose and let it sit for 20 minutes. Started her up and no smoke whatsoever. I can't feel a difference in idling/driving, but I didn't have any problems before so that's probably a good thing.
As for not getting any smoke from the treatment, I've had the car on a steady diet of fuel additives from new, so it's possible there just wasn't much buildup to begin with.
