Heading home from work on Tuesday night around 8:30. There was a few inches of very slippery snow, almost icey I was driving extra cautious because there are alot of hills on the way I travel. I get on top of the second hill and the car in front of me brakes hard and starts to slide. The car started sliding into the other lane, then I guess the driver tried to correct it and began to spin the other direction. I was a safe distance away but when she started spinning the car stayed on the same place. She spun around 3 times, I braked and couldnt stop in time. I slammed into her rear bumper as she was completing her 3 spin. Once I made contact my car went into a shallow ditch.
I got out quickly and asked if she was OK, she was. An eyewitness stood on the top of the hill to warn other drivers. Then we decided to move her car to prevent any other accidents. Even when we had all the vehicles moved there were a 2 or 3 incidents where people were sliding out of control.
Cops finally showed up, asked a few questions, took our information. Few minutes they came out of their car, told us that it was a non-reportable accident. No one got a fine or points, so everything had to done through the insurance. Turns out the girl was only 18 years old, probably her first real experience in snow.
I went yesterday after my insurance set up my appointment at the body shop of my choice. $3400 for a new bumper, bumper support, hood, radiator, radiator support, stripes, chrome trim, hood emblem, and headlight washer noozle. Total parts cost was just under $2000. Body work labor, paint labor, paint supplies and shop supplies was the rest of the balance. I think there were few things that could have been reuse. example: the bumper support, its has some paint scraps but sturcturely it looks fine.
The next two days after the accident my car was still driveable. Thursday night I noticed a puddle under the car. I got out and tried to see what it smelled like. I couldnt really tell, I went inside and got a flashlight. I noticed another smaller pudddle where I just parked. Wouldnt you know, I opened the hood to antifreeze leaking from the radiator. Previously I checked but checked behind the bumper. But where it was leaking was above the bumper, guess the hood/grill broke the radiator support and radiator.

So sorry to hear about your accident. Thank God nobody was hurt. I hate winter, snow, and ice. Keep the faith, I'm sure you'll get all the car's dealt with and be back on the road shortly.

So did that driver end up dieing or did he make it out alive. And the announcer said that was Mercedes second time crashing like that? Third time might be the charm.

I know outmotoring has the front bumper and radiator grill for $502 plus shipping. I just wonder if my body shop could come up with on (cheaper without shipping cost) The only thing I'm concerned about is the bumper being a 2 part paint job, being that its texture paint.

mmm, my bumper isn't textured (well other than a couple of stone chips and some "cone rash" ) - maybe an aftermarket protecter? Either way stock paint is a 2 part paint (base/clear)...

I had someone back up into my mini about a year ago and I needed to get a new bumper. Instead of replacing with the stock bumper I went for the Aero bumper. I wound up getting it at Morristown Mini as their price was by far the lowest.
I was concerned about painting the trim as well. Wound up using textured bumper coating. The stuff that was on 80's and early 90's cars with black bumpers. I think any bodyshop will know it and be able to get their hands on the stuff. Comes in an aerosol can and winds up matching the color of the trim great. The texture doesn't match perfectly as the trim is plastic and the bumper is painted, but as far as I know its the best option. Its honestly so close that no one is going to know unless their staring at it from two feet away. I've had it like this for a year and no one has ever noticed.
Hope this helps

The aero bumper has the wheel arches as part of the bumper. You have the choice of either painting all the arches on the car body colored or painting the"arches" on the aero bumper black. But to get the same texture it needs to be done with some special paint......
And right now Outmotoring.com has the best price on just the bumper and grills.

WOW, Doesnt look any worse then mine. You might have more hood damage.
I talked to the body shop about the aero bumper. They said I would have to buy the bumper myself, then they would credit me the amount from the factory bumper. Then they said wouldnt guarantee that they could get the moulding to match. so I said forget it. I just want it fixed, but I have to wait until Feb 22nd.

Well, I dropped off my car on the Monday the 22nd. I got a call on Friday saying that my car was done and I could pick it up around 5pm. They said that they still had a piece that they just discovered was it was broken and should have it by Wednesday.
First impression: Paint and finish look top notch.
But then quickly went into my nit-picking mod. I was wondering what piece was missing, so I had the guys show me. It's on the back side of the hood and goes into the fender, I guess to keep the hood lined up. But it was on the passenger side.
I noticed that the driverside of the hood wasnt lining up, like the hood wasnt latched. This side was latching before it went in. It was the passenger side that wouldnt latch, the side that was hit.
So then I go inside to sign my papers to hand into the insurance company. Now my estimate was $3400, the paper I signed I thought said $4200. The copy I received said $4000 and some change. I asked the guy what was the right amount (not that it matters its all paid by ins) He checked both papers and found that the copy to the insurance company was inncorrect. Then he went into some story about that some parts they ordered were not used. They order hood hinges and he mentioned a battery tray?? WTF!!?!? you have my vin # its a cooper s, the battery is in the boot.
So I get home and go over my estimate comparing it to my actual bill. The body work, paint work and paint supplies were all close to the estimate. But the all the parts in the estimate were way under quoted. A few things by as much as $50. But what ticked me off, my estimate had 30 some items to repair or replace. The final bill had 62. I found that 6 or 7 lines I would consider questionable. 3 of them I'm still not sure (repl molding, molding adhesive kit, and center filler) but the others I discovered what they were. They replaced my hood scoop....?!?!? my hood scoop was not damaged. It wasnt only the hood scoop, it was everything. Here is how it was listed: Bezel, Plate, Air Duct, and Air Duct Nuts.
This is probably why my driver side of hood doesnt look like it latches. I have the alta air diverter. Its probably hitting the factory air duct. Pisses me off cause I modified mine to work with the alta diverter.
I'm going Monday to confront them about this. Question is, should I contact my Insurance company and tell them they replaced parts they didnt have to???

The body shop might have been trying to get a few more $$$ from the insurance company. You usually get an estimate from an appraiser after the accident, and after it gets to the body shop they give an additional estimate if there are parts the appraisal didn't catch (under the hood type of stuff, etc.) If they bumped up the estimate at the body shop but then didn't actually order/replace all the parts they said they would, they did more or less two things - get a little extra $$ from the insurance company but it also means the deductible you paid (if you had to pay one?) should have been less.
I'd be back at the shop to get it finished (i.e. - hood doesn't latch => safety issue) - in the meantime I'd also get a hold of my insurance agent to "off the record" discuss the estimate vs bill (as in make sure you're not responsible for the difference)...
I guess you need to decide who you like better, your agent or the body guy
