2005 Cooper - CVT automatic - 34K miles, 3 months out of warranty - totally stock engine :D
My 'Service Engine Soon' light came on this morning, and I'd like to determine what the code is before bringing it all the way to the dealership. I'm 'hoping' it is for the oxygen sensor... but realize it could be anything.
Is there a way - by using the key - to get the odometer to display error codes? This was possible on a 99 Dodge minivan, so I'm hoping it is something that can be done on a MINI.
Otherwise, I'll have to make a trek to a local shop to have them scan the mini.
Thanks!

I don't know of an easy way to get codes without a reader.
However, you can go to AutoZone, Advanced or other parts stores and most will read the codes for you. They will not clear the codes but they can tell you what codes are coming up.
I recommend any DIY person to have a code reader. You can get a basic unit for $50 and they are very useful. I have helped at least a dozen people with the basic unit I have either getting codes or clearing codes.
The MINI isn't like a Chrysler where you can turn the key on 3 times while standing on one foot and holding your tounge in your teeth and get the trouble code.
You will definitely need a tool of some sort or an OBD II program to run on your computer (get one that reads CAN protocol). I have "ProScan" running on my Acer netbook (you will also need a ELM327 cable (Available on eBay) to plug your laptop into the OBD II port on the MINI. Way cool! At $59.00, it is not a bad deal; AutoEnginuity is a lot better and has more capability to do things, but at $450.00+ I just did not had the cash and ProScan will tell you what is wrong, plus it will act as a dyno too. I enjoy being able to diagnose my own issues with the MINI if I need to. ProScan will also display real-time data and record as well. Again, way cool and helpful if you have to go to the dealer...you can show them you are not imagining the problem.
