Dead on the offramp

2009 mcs w/ 9k.

Sitting in the car and waiting for the tow truck. My wife called this morning to complain the heat was not working. I assumed operater error but about 10 minutes later I get a call the yellow engine malfuction light is on and she is on her way back home. Five minutes later the phone rings again and she is stuck on the offramp with the engine overheat light on(red). I get down to meet her and pop the hood and notice oil leaking under the plastic engine cover and the oil smells and looks cooked. I'll post some pics when I get home.

Did one more walk around and noticed the lower oil cooler/radiator has damage. I think the wife forgot to mention the already dead possum she ran over. The lower bumper has no visible damage so it didn't jump right out when I got to the car.

Looks like Rasmussen MINI is swamped, I'm having them attempt to fix the cold start rattle while the other issues are taken care of. I guess this makes my posts in theStock Problems/Issues thread worthy as the dead Raccoon Vs Mini was not a MINI issue.

Actually good to know. I haven't encountered or created any road kill yet but I will be sure to inspect if this happens. Good luck!

Some people say that I will never get the money out of my MINI that I have put into it. I say, "I get my money's worth everytime I hit the ignition button".

Dead possums turning into dead Raccoons after hitting the oil cooler is a known issue with 2nd Gen MINIs. I believe there is a service bulletin on it.

Hope they can reproduce the tensioner problem, and get it fixed. Haven't had any problems with my MCS since they fixed it.

My wife thought it was a possum but I think it was a Raccoon so we agreed to call it a Raccossum.

It lost all coolant after the hit.

Yikes! Aluminum engine blocks don't take well to running with no water in them, hope she shut it down in time to save it!

Hope the engine is OK. Otherwise, this dog's sad expression may be shared by the rest of the family.

You may want to talk to your insurance company, if this gets expensive. After all, it was caused by a collision. They do cover for close encounters of the Raccossum kind, don't they?

I have a sinking feeling it might be toast. I wonder if my insurance company is going to balk at the bill if it is? I know, dumb question.

On another sour note we have a Saturn rental, as exciting as khaki slacks.

You should be covered under your comprehensive under "road hazard" type damage. As always, read the fine print...

Update

Our insurance will be covering the repairs. My wife talked to the SA and he listed off a huge laundry list of items to be fixed. He also mentioned that they might not be able to repair the engine and may have to install a remanufactured one. I'm going to call Monday and see if my warranty will still be in effect with with a donor motor.

I was told it might be done next week. Rasmussen Mini is slapping a remanufactured engine in Nibbler and the warranty will still be in effect. Now the question is should I try and trade it in now or wait until the warranty is about to expire? My wife found a nice justacooper on the lot that she really likes.

The good news is the reman. should have the updated tensioner so the cold start rattle will be gone.

Wow, that's a lot of money for an animal hit.......thank god for good insurance.

Also glad it wasn't really her fault the engine cooked, although after hitting the animal I guess she could have asked you to check the car out for damage - bet she will if it ever happens again!

Glad you got your MINI back and running - it'll be interesting to see if you can tell any difference between the engines...
