Horn Problems

About two or three weeks after my last oil change, I noticed that my horn wasn't working (it was the first time since the oil change that I tried to use it, so I don't know whether it was the shop I took it to or something unrelated that caused this problem). For about a week, if I hit the horn button I would get a brief (1/8 of a second) sound from the horns (full volume) and then they would cut off completely for a while. I kept putting off trying to figure it out until some woman on her cell phone about ran me off the road because she tried to merge her SUV onto my car and I barely kept it from being an accident.

Here are the symptoms I have noticed:
  • There is completely no horn anymore
  • The fuse is intact and fully functional (tested with the multimeter)
  • The connectors to both horns are seated properly (I reseated them myself)
  • When I press the horn button, I can hear a relay click
  • I have not noticed any other electrical problems
With the horns being inconveniently located for easy servicing, I'd like some suggestions on things to check and try before I take it in for a pro to work on. It seems like some sort of an electrical issue, but my Haynes manual is buried well within one of the boxes in my new apartment so I'm not really sure where to check. Advice on this would be appreciated.

first I'd pull a connector and check that you are getting juice to the horn via a multimeter.

the relay is on the pass' compartment fusebox.

if you can dig out your Haynes there's a good diagram....

I've heard of several people with horn issues. Maybe the dealer could help diagnose.

If I knew which box the Haynes was in, I would dig it out... spent about 30 minutes looking for it last night before I saw something shiny. :( I'll try hitting it with a multimeter tonight when I'm at a friend's place and can have someone push the horn button for me.

Well, voltage levels on the horn jump to what I would expect to be nominal levels. 12.35 on the left, 12.44 on the right, and the other horn was connected during these tests. Ideas?

Had exact same problem and went through same checklist as you. It was the horns themselves. I found replacements (there are 2 horns, high and low tones) at Autozone right off the rack but had to reuse old wiring harnesses. 30 minute fix.

I doubt that both horns crapped out at once but unless you're really listening you may not have noticed when the first one went out.

I don't remember the model number but if you bring in an old horn you can compare to those on the rack.

Hope this works for you.
