Steering wheel lock problem....Ideas ?

04 MINI Auto Trans.

Several times my wife has had her Mini's steering wheel lock so hard that she has been unable to free it enough to turn the key. Today it stranded her for several hours in a parking lot until a tow truck finally showed up and the driver was able to manhandle the steering wheel enough to get the key to turn. She was a very unhappy camper

Anyone have this issue and figured out a solution ?

Anyone know how to disable the steering wheel lock ?

Not something that is adjustable or removable. Just make sure not to have the wheel turned when parking.

Happens when the wheels are straight as well.
Since the steering lock is electrical based on input from the ignition/key lock assembly there has to be an electrical signal sent to engage the locking pin. So it could be disabled or the locking pin removed. I have found many posts on BMW forums of the same issue with many BMWs and folks who have removed the spring that drives the locking pin.......but the MINI is likely different in design.

On the Rover's built/designed by BMW there is an ECU that tells the locking pin what to do and that ecu is getting data from the key. On the Rovers we check a 2nd key to see if it happens if so then you may have a bad key or the ecu is going bad. You can also break the pin and then your done, the car won't start at all. We have not had to happen with a MINI but it may start soon with age and miles. This "system" makes the cars very hard to steal, and can be a PIA for owners too.

My steering wheel only locks if I move the wheel after shutting the car off. If it did lock, I just move the wheel a little bit to the left, or was it the right? Then turn the key. Without moving the wheel that little bit, the key will not turn at all.

Yes, but that is not what happens on our Mini, every once and awhile it will lock and require serious muscle on the steering wheel to free up the key. This doesn't happen everytime, but when it does, getting it free is no easy task.
