Tire Pressure Sensor Reset

This is a curiosity, not a real problem.

Have an 09 MC. Rotated the tires and the sensor warning symbol shows when I start the car and for about twenty feet when I begin to move. I have tried to reset it by pushing the stalk end, but the symbol disappears.

Previously, in my first MINI, the symbol stayed lit and a reset option came up and worked.

What confuses me is the disappearance of the symbol and its reappearance after the car has set for awhile.

Any ideas?

I'd talk to your dealer's shop. The TPS is supposed to stay on until you reset it. If it's turning itself off, then something isn't working correctly.

Thanks. I think I will do that. Have to travel up that way (2hrs) around Thanksgiving. I may try changing the pressure in all the tires a couple of pounds to see if that makes a difference. It should absolutely stay lit, then. Maybe it's just on the edge of its threshold.

Turn on the engine and try resetting it with the stalk before you start driving. When it says resetting, then start driving.

This may be normal as they do not want you to drive while trying to reset the tire pressure.

Good thought. I have hit the button before moving, but it just cancels the image. I know the tires are OK, however, because I checked their pressures. So, I'll try your suggestion again and if it is still recalcitrant, I'll try adjusting the pressures significantly--and then I'll make plans to visit the dealer.

I drove about five miles down to the tire shop and increased tp to 35psi all around. The tp warning symbol came up and stayed on. I was able to select "RESET" and it flashed over to "RESETTING". Dash light on speedo stayed on. When I got home, it was still on. Is that normal? If not, it's back to the original plan of visiting the dealer when I get a chance. (You'll all recognize that many of us grew up before there were such things as tp monitors and don't consider one that doesn't work a crisis.)

If the light does not reset and go off after you follow the steps, that is not normal.

All I can say is try it again and if it still does not work, it may be time for the dealer.

I thought I remember reading on this forum that there was some time or distance you needed to drive after hitting the "reset" button, before it would actually reset?

Usually perhaps a mile and about a minute for me.

Good news. Looks like Corcoranwtnet is right. Light went out after about five miles. It took me a second short trip to get that distance.

Thanks for listening and chiming-in.
