Warranty and Expected Life

In only two years, my 07 MCSa has hit 42000 miles. I'm nearing the end of the factory warranty, and found out that BMW / Mini doesn't offer a factory warranty extension. Quick poll, what should I do?

1) Just go no warranty

2) Get a 3rd party warranty (please recommend one if you suggest this)

3) Trade in the car (really don't want to)

On a related note, how many miles can I expect my Cooper S to last? I love driving it, but 42,000 in two years is making me a bit concerned. Where should I start expecting problems? 60K? 100K? 150K?

At what point will the car be no longer worth it to fix? Should I garage it and look at driving something else, or should I keep enjoying the car with the knowledge it will last well past 100K with no significant issues?

On another related note, how long will the transmission last... and am I reducing it's life by driving completely in paddle-shift mode (and aggressively I might add)?

Finally, I wanted to do some performance mods... exhaust, chip, and maybe IC. Should I look at doing them now before I get any more miles on, or will it be no big deal if I wait another 10-15K?

I guess I'm just realizing that the life of my very treasured possession is limited. Please answer my questions and make me feel better (and tell me what to do). I cried when I had to get rid of my first Mini.

When it costs you more than a new car payment every month, it's time to say goodbye to your old crush and buy a new one.

Buying Extended Warranty is insurance and they must take in a lot more money than they pay out to stay in business.

I don't drive enough miles to consider extending warranty, but here is one site to look at if you are considering buying one:

How to buy an auto extended warranty and avoid scams

You don't mention if your MINI has had an unusual amount of problems,
remember that you are usually ahead of the game by paying repair bills yourself.

I thought MINI did offer extended warranty - at least my dealer tried to sell me one - factory and said you could buy it anytime before the end of the factory warranty but costs would be higher than..

Maybe they only did for 2009 models.

What MINI offers is an Extended Maintenance Plan, from 3yr/36k to 6yr/100k for $1395 or more,
not a good deal unless you plan to blow some clutches or brake disk/pads.

Toyota sells a 5yr/60k Maintenance Plan that even includes tire rotations plus all that MINI does,
it's done every six months/6k miles and costs $800.

In Sales Final Office at purchase, they will try to sell a non-MINI Extended Warranty at a huge markup,
not a good deal at all, since you can purchase one later for half, if you even want one.

pilotart has a great link! Check it out! We have used Warranty Direct in the past and have had a ton of success with them. We have NOT purchased an extended warranty on the MINI but that does not mean we won't. I am electing to hold off until just before 10K....if she is trouble free by then, we will not be going with any extended warranty.

I'd worry more about what's surrounding that rock solid tranny than the tranny itself. paddles, stick, it doesnt matter.

Also, if you go extended warranty of any kind, do one through your dealer so there will be no doubts about honoring said coverage. Mine does a 7 year* 100K extension of the 4 year 50K (this is NOT the xtended mtce) through GE Services. This is the only way to go IMO.

*7 years from original in-service date, or when U took delivery.

at likely less cost and have the same plan.

MINI-USA is not connected to GE Services.

IMO the repairs start to come at 100k. You gotta decide then whether to keep the thing or get something newer. That's probably why the extended warranties stop at 100k. They know the deal, they're in the insurance business.

Never said it was. GE is the 3rd party X/W program my specific dealer offers that, according to them, is honored by all MINI dealers across America. A motorer that signed up for GE just before the OEM warranty expired blew the engine in his 07 R56 (snapped valve train retaining bolt that caused a catastrophic chain reaction) and GE covered the $9,000 engine replacement minus a $200 deductible. He even got a loaner no charge in the process.

Besides the initial cost outlay and deductibles, GE's is not that much different from OEM: free loaner, roadside assistance, etc. But its pricey, $2500 give or take a few hundred.

You've driven the car 42,000 miles already, what kind of problems have you had? If none or minor I would just keep motoring without a warranty and at the first major problem trade it in or sell it after the repair.

I would say no, you're not doing anything bad by using the flappy paddles to shift. When you use them, you're just dictating to the tranny when do shift, but the actual shift happens in the same way regardless if it's initiated manually or automatically.
