Helpppp!!!! Engine light?

I was driving today going to my dads company going on the on ramp to a freeway. I acciendtally shifted from 3rd to 2nd instead of 4th and pushed my clutch back in right away. It did redline but only for about 1 or 2 seconds. I drove about an hour on the freeway and no problems and got off then ended up at my dads company. I turned off the engine and didnt start it up till about 6 hours later, when i was going to leave. 10 min into driving and no problems. as i was going on the freeway for 5 min then merged onto another freeway. But as i was merging the on ramp had a bump and my car did a little bounce. Right after the check engine light came on. Its color is yellow and holding steady. Drove for another 35 min and engine and everything seems fine. Do you think its from the quick redline? Or from the bump. Is it safe to drive? Till i have the time to take it into the shop? Im scared that it will be something big and cost alot since my maintenance is up but my warranty is still fine. I have about 46k. Oh its also a mcs 2007

It must be the "bumb" in your car... Do you know him? Kidding aside I think there's a way to check if there's malfunction code, never done it though...

Haha well I also wanted to note. Could it just be a sensor that has gone bad?

I have seen this happen in those circumstances, engine may have run bit lean on bank II due to sudden power surge and eventaully tripped a code after. If you know someone who has a Scanguage II or similar device, you can read and clear the code shutting off that light.

And if you go to an Autozone, they will be able to clear it, but not read it ( so I have been told ) which to me is a bit dumb because then you have no idea what the issue was to begin with.....

Check with your friends- we have sold thousands of these and thus one of your friends is bound to have one or something similar:

Scan/Reset Tool for MINI Cooper and Cooper S, 2001-2006
If you've ever had a 'check engine light' illuminate, you know the uneasy feeling of not knowing the seriousness of the problem. This scan tool will tell you the error code so you can look it up or check with the shop whether it is okay to continue driving.
Reads all engine and emissions related fault codes and resets check engine and service engine soon lights. Does NOT reset airbag faults.
  • Has your MINI Cooper or Cooper S ever stalled, been slow to start, idled poorly or hesitated during acceleration?
  • Has the "Service Engine Soon" come on when everything seemed fine?
  • Would you like to be able to verify that all is well before paying big bucks for that smog certification?
  • Have you brought your car in to a repair shop with an engine or service light on, received a costly repair bill, and wondered if the repairs and charges were legitimate, or wondered if you could have done it yourself

swisstexmini,

did you find out why that light came on? The same thing happened to me. Was driving on the fwy, downshifted from 6 to 5... then the "service engine soon" light came on. It turned off two days later and just turned on again today. Car is running fine but don't know what to do. No more warranty... Any help would be appreciated.

Yes i brought it to the dealer and they said the key had no data of the engine light turning on. They went to go check out the car anyway because i felt it might be something wrong even tho the car drove fine.

Bad part is( for you) For me i had warranty...

They said i was lucky that I came in and they caught the problem quick..

The whole chain tensor and everything that is part of that stuff. They basically took my engine apart to find the problem haha. But you never know, it could just be a faulty sensor that got out of place then shifted back in and the light turned off in your case. Just bring it in and have them look. They cant charge you much for anything and most likely if its the chain tensor they will fix it for free because its a known problem that occurs with the minis, same as the fuel pump.
