Potential 2002 owner... concerned about tranny "groan"
Hi everyone... I'm currently looking at a really nice condition, one owner 2002 Mini (non-s) at my dealership. I just stopped by to take a test drive... it only has 49k, and drives nice, and the price is great, but I'm concerned about a "groaning" coming from the driver's side in the engine compartment. At first I thought it was a CV joint or wheel bearings, but quickly realized the sound is only happening when the 5speed manual is engaged. I haven't driven a front wheel drive car in a long time, but this is loud enough to make me think it could be a problem down the road (at low speeds its very obvious... at higher speeds it blends in a bit better with the engine noise).
So, my question to the wise collective is if this sound is typical of the early 5 speed manuals, or is indicative of impending tranny failure? Besides needing tires, I'd be signing papers right now if that moan didn't "haunt" me on the test drive : ).
Thanks in advance... and I hope to join the club soon!
