Help replacing Power Steering Pump Fan

Can someone please tell me if changing the power steering pump fan is a do-it-yourself job? Mine has died and the local BMW dealership wants $260 for the fan and 1.7 hours of labor to install it. How hard is it to install and exactly how do I replace it?

Also, if someone knows a good place to buy the part online instead of at the dealership, please let me know. Seems like a lot of cash for a small fan.

Thanks ,

Colin

I think it is just 2 bolts and a power connector. I hear it is a pretty easy job.

Edit: Checked the Bentley manual, it is indeed two nuts and power connector. Really simple thing to do once you get the car up on ramps or stands.

men you just can't imagine how easy is this job,

jack the car, like if you chage you wheel go under unbolt the 2 bolt that hold the fan, disconect the connector, and put the new one.

if you take your time and triple check your job it should take 20 minutes

f... the dealer they really abuse

You're really getting ripped off if the dealer charges $260.00 just for the fan. I just bought one from Classic Mini and with the NAM 20% discount it was only $116.00 plus shipping. And as tropicantango mentioned, it's only a 20 minute swapout. How can the dealer possibly think that it takes 1.7 hours to do it is beyond me.

1) remove the 5A fuse for the fan, drivers side floor panel.

2) There are only two 13 mm bolts easily accessed just beyond the oil drain plug, but use a SAE 1/2 socket, not a 13 mm, ( Including your 13mm oil plug - the 1/2 fits tighter and lessens the possiblity of rounding off the bolt head....)

3) With the housing on the deck, gently press tab that is on one side of the connector and unplug it, now you can removed the whole unit.

Reverse these directions for install, and don't forget to put your fuse back in!

Start up car, turn on A/C, if you did everything correctly, the PS Fan should kick on about 30 seconds later ......

When changing oil, unbolt the fan housing and turn it upside down and give it a gentle rap on some rags so as not to damage it. A lot of sand and debris should come out....some good preventive maintenance.
