idling at 1100-1200

reving at 1300-1400rpm
good afternoon to you all

i have a problem with my 2004 mini cooper s.lately it has been idling very high. approx 1300 or so revs when stationary and when the engine is at normal operating temp.when the car is cold and i start up it revs to about 1500 drops to 1000 and up again to 1500 until it finally stabilises to about 1200. then after a while drops to normal. also when taking off and shifting from first to second gear at lets say 3000 or 4000 thousand revs and press the clutch in the revs get stuck at 1500 for a few seconds and then drops to 1000 and then to 800. took it to the dealer who put it on the diagnostic machine and the verdict was throttle body. he reset the throttle and was fine for a few minutes then the same again. i found another throttle body from a friend who had changed his to a larger one and i changed it this morning. it worked fine for about 10 minutes or so but when the car warms up or in traffic back to square one again...this morning while sitting in the car it was idling at 1000 or so revs. however, when the cooling fan came on the revs dropped to around 800.. then when fan went off it jumped to over 1000 or so revs... any advice would be greatly appreciated and my apologies for the long post

Sounds like maybe it could be a engine speed sensor. That would be my guess.

Leave it alone...people are paying good money to do just what your Mini is doing...

Hahahaha

Also, you might want to check your cooolant lines and anti-freeze. For some reason my car was idling funny and getting really hot, but I checked the coolant and added some more(a few onces,3-5ish) and the problem was gone.

thanks for the reply guys
i have checked the coolant level and its ok. i know many people whould like to have the revs up however when gearing down the car doesnt decelerate especially in second gear and low revs...some of the guys in the local minifans club are assuming that it may be the 02 sensor either pre-cat or post. anyway i dont trust the dealers cause the one i visited lately said its the throttle body that is not working properly. luckily i found another one and installed it only to have reoccuring problem. they use the process of elimination and had it not been for the forums many of us would have to dearly pay their lack of ability to pinpoint the problems..anyway, anyone else with a solution or cause to this problem. mind you the car is not stock.it has 15% pulley.alta induction kit and jcw injectors and ngk iridium spark plugs. any further advice is always welcome and much appreciated.
thanks in advance

A vacuum leak could also cause idle to increase. Or a faulty bypass valve maybe???

hi to all and thanks for the reply
took the car to the local lealer and told him about the prob.also told him that i replaced the throttlr control unit. he then put the diagnostic device and re-calibrated the throttle unit and told we to drive around for a while. so i did and guess what more of the same but not as bad doesnt idle as high now but not normal especially when the car is warm..when cold it idles fine...will take it down again on wednesday and see what he comes up with..until then i simply wont drive the car but take my bike.
