so my alternator is dying.

pretty sure it is. at idle at red lights, the car will shut off, and i have to hit the gas and itll catch itself and turn back on. voltage drops real low.

ive tried 2 batts....

would it hurt anything if i start the car, and take the battery terminal off? if it dies, i would know its the alt (but would that hurt anything else in the MINI?)

also, is there any MINI's out there that has a High Output alt? or 2 alts?

if it is infact dying, its my fault, so i cant blame the car.....i had my 3000w amp (that prally draws a TON of current) on the stock battery, and the alt prally wore itself out trying to keep up and recharging the battery when it constantly was draining when the bass hit.

Just so i am clear. You hooked the amp up to the battery and not one of the wires coming off the alternator (probably pretty hard given where it is, but i cnat say for sure). If you hooked it up to the battery then you probably didnt do any harm to the alternator.

Do me a favor and see if you can fin out what the maximum amperage draw on your amp is.

Its at least 300 amps, prally more, at full tilt. Its a powerbass xa-3000d. It was hooked to the batt, but the alt had a really hard time charging the stock battery when the amp drained it

Is the MINI's electrical system that taxed? Isn't the stock HK system like 250watts? I'm not sure that your amp is to blame for over working the alternator but I guess if you continually discharged the battery by running th e stereo with the car off that could do it. I'd take it to autozone to have it tested for free and if you think the amp is to blame get an Optima Yellow Top deep cycle battey and a small 1/2 Farad capacitor (which will still be overkill for that amplifier).

Is the problem only occur when the stereo on? I ask because I had the same problem with my Saturn. Running 3 amps each on 30 amp breakers. Went away after installing yellow top battery and cap for each amp. As Deviant said probably overkill, but I didn't have to replace alternator, and it never died again at a light.

Alright let me re-explain the situation...lol

The amp I have just for my sub, is 3000w RMS @ 1 ohm, deffinently more than my stcok h/k system lol...

Anyways, I only played it with the car on. I HAVE a kinetik hc2400 battery, look that batt up, its huge, a lot bigger than a yellow top. But before I had that, I had the amp on the stock batt. The 3000w amp was draining that stock battery like there was no tomorow. Now, when I got the bigger battery and replaced the stock one with the big one, the voltage drop wasent as bad.

I took the amp out about 2 weeks ago, and this just started happening a few days ago, but like ones or twice. Last night it did it at almost every red light. Didn't have anything on either, except the a/c

Have you put a meter on the alt to see if it's still working? If you don't have a meter, take it to any elec shop, they can easily check it for you, then you'll know what to do..........
