power steering fan seized up?!?

so i took my MCSc in for her first servicing. i knew my backup sensors had just recently stopped working and asked them to look at that too please. i was told the backup sensors stopped working because the fuse blew and the fuse blew because the power steering pump fan siezed up. they fixed and replaced everything in a day and i wasn't charged anything, picked my car up that night (yeah mini of sterling!) but can anyone tell me why the fan might have siezed up? is this a common occurance? did driving the car around for a few weeks w/o the fan working do any long term damage??

just wondering...and a little concerned. thanks!

You could have had something sucked into the fan and that seized it. Used to happen regularly on the older cars but supposedly there was a redesign. You could have also just got unlucky and had a failure from the factory. That happens also.
Not sure about the long term damage aspect.

The fan is in such a vulnerable place that this unfortunatly happens quite a bit. Just keep a ear tuned for any unusual noises and a different feel in the steering and you ca nstay on top if it. Maby as you get near the end of warrenty you can take it back for a final check up. This is one of the weak points design wise of a pretty good car.
