Two-way radios

Today, I had a silver w/white top pass me three lanes over and had no opportunity to acknowledge them. I would like to suggest that if you have a 2-way radio carry it with you when you are out motoring so you could say hello even if you were 3 lanes over and behind another MINI. I never saw this guy/lady until she/he was speeding away at mach 3. We should agree on the channel/sub-channel to use to make it work at least for the southeast. Give me some feedback here and get off that cell phone and motor on.

So, I think everybody should do it. If I'm in florida, should I put in my cb radio and use that on Ch. 7? Or is no one here doing it?> All MINI owners should do it. It would be great, and with cb, you could get longer distance, the antenna my look like crap, I'm not sure, but even w/ it inside to boot or something it still works great.. I just don't know if anyone would do it down here...

Can someone with a two way radio talk to a CB Radio?

I didn't think the two way radios can talk to or hear CB Radios. I'm new to the mini world and to two way radio's . I'm a AV installer and should know the answer to my question but I don't . Can someone clear this up for me?
Thanks

Also what is the deal with 7-21. I'm on ch7 but what is the 21?

I'm not sure about CB's and two-ways having the same channel frequencies either. As for the "21," some of the more recent two-way radios have the main channels - 7 - and additional subchannels - subchannel 21 - in this case. we can talk more when I see you to show you. be there or be square motoring.

No CB and the two way radios are different and can not talk to each other.

Chanel 7 is the "Chanel" and 21 is the "Sub Chanel". You need a two way with sub chanels. Anyone in your club, or someone that sells the radios, would be able to help you. I never used the radios before either and it is easy once explained to you but kinda hard to explain in writing.

Thanks for the info.

Well I forgot that I have used a two way radio before. We have some at work too. Anyway I just looked at the ones at work and they have the sub channels. I don't believe the ones I just brought have the sub channels. So they will now go back to the store. (well after the trip this weekend  ). Again thanks for the info.

I will also keep the two way in my car from now on because I saw a red mini going south on I-65 as I was going north just this morning. You can't blink your lights at someone on the other side of the highway. They can't see you. SO get the Two ways out. Let's be friends and let's motor.

One of they guys in our club was upset because he thought his 2way radios didn't have the sub channels, we messed with the settings for a little while and sure enough, he had them and was a Happy Motorer once again.

I think that most of the family service radios except the very cheapest will have the "privacy" or "sub-channels". Check the packaging before buying, and then read like 1/4 th of the instructions that come with the radio, you might be surprised what all the radios can do, I know I was. Maybe I will read the rest of the instructions next year.

What is a good set to get. (two way Radio)

I know I'm asking alot of questions but I trying to help myself and other people with the same question. Anyway. The ones I got where Bellsouth Two ways. Who knows who makes them!! I paid somewhere around $40.00. They say they are 5 mile range but I got about half mile out of them but I also had alot of trees. So like I said before I'm a Audio Video Installer and I know that one brand can make a good TV but not a good VCR. SEE what I'm saying. I believe Motorola are good two ways but also in the $70.00 range right? There are others. So which ones do you like?????

This is funny that we are talking about Two way radios and not MINI's. But we need Two way's to talk to MINI Drivers!

Most radios, if packaged as Family Service Radio, have subchannels. Often referred as privacy codes. Here is a Bellsouth radio that does have the subchannels. Is yours similiar? http://www.uselectronics.info/items....riation_id=170

The reason CB's will not talk to FRS radios is because CB's range is 27-29MHz while FRS is around 460MHz. The subchannels, or privacy code is used so that people can talk on the same frequency but no interfere with each other. If you transmit on a frequency but use a certain code, only the ones listening for that specific code should recieve your transmission even if they are on the same frequency. Basically if you have a 14 channel radio with 38 codes. That's almost like having 532 channels.

most of the FRS radios do have sub-channels.. basically a tone encoded squelch circuit.. that only opens up the receiver when hearing that tone.. in theory you can listen to all of the conversations on a given channel if your have no privacy code.

also many of the radios have dual output settings.. when they are first turned on they are on the "low" output setting.. you have to program the channel of "high" output. this might be the reason it doesn't go very far..

Magic, I have a set of Cobra's I purchased at Wal-Mart for $30. They are only the two mile version but work fine for me. There are better more expensive radios but I'm too cheap to buy better.

If you don't have a radio tomorrow, I have a spare one you can borrow for the ride up there. I'll be joining the group in Athens since I live in Hazel Green, north of Huntsville. If you need to use it, ask for Steve that drives the BRG/B MCS. Then again, with that many MINI's around, just look for the person that has the look of a kid in a candy store. That'll be me.

Thanks Steve but this afternoon I went by Walmart (even thou I hate Walmart) and picked up a set of Cobra two way radios. They were $50.00. They say they have a 6 mile range. Ofcouse I know that depends on the area. They have 22 channels and 38 sub channels. They also have NOaa weather radio. They come with 2 earbuds so you can do The Italian Job hands free thing. Also they come with rechargeable battery pack and charger unit. The model is PR560-2 WX EVP.

This info is for anyone that would like to know what to get. Again thanks to everybody.

Today I saw a Blue Mini and I called out for them on the Two way Radio but I didn't get anyone on the line. I hope Mini Drivers are seeing this info. If anyone is in the cullman,Decatur area, then keep your eyes open for me. British Green Mini with white top. From time to time I'm in the Huntsville area. My two ways are on when I'm in the Mini. One on 7-21 and one on Scan.

By the way check out my new site at
