Winter Question

I am moving to Minneapolis from FL. I am about to buy a new Mini but have been told by several people to avoid Minis because of the winter. How are Minis in the winter? Would I have a problem getting to work in the AM? I leave at about 5am every day, so would I have a problem? Right now I will be staying in Maple Grove. I know that the plowing in Minneapolis is terrific but should I be concerned?
Everyone I know is telling me to get an AWD car with higher clearance. I know that AWD is best, but I can't seem to find a car that I like that has AWD for a similar price. What has been your experience in the winter with your Mini?
Thanks,

Your best bet is to invest in a set of snow tires. I've been driving our MINIs through Mpls winters since 2003 with dedicated snow tires and have had zero problems. Each winter is great and the security of having traction in the cold season is a nice comfort. For as flat as Mpls tends to be, I think you'll do just fine with your MINI in winter. If you're still a bit gun-shy about it, there's a car control clinic sponsored by BMWCCA where you could hone your skills. Don't worry about it. Get some winter tires and you'll be set. Besides, we haven't really had a good winter here in years.....

Hey miniminn! if you haven't done so... check out the 'Sota MINIs site for local events and forum (click link below my sig)

I'm actually heading up to MN next week for their NL2NB rally. If you're in Maple Grove already and have nothing going on Sat afternoon (5/17), head on over to Hansen Park in New Brighton between 3-6pm to meet and greet.

Thanks! I won't actually be there for a few more weeks. Also, I won't get my Mini until July
I will go to an event as soon as I get it!!!

If you get snow tires you'll have no problem. By the way, don't mess with steel wheels. There are many great buys for MINI wheels here on NAM and on E-bay.

Hey! I drove my MINI all winter here! only problems were that I couldnt get my doors open, but Motorwerks MINI replaced my handles with the newer 2005 models. so they should work perfect next winter! : )
also it almost overheated because the front vents got covered in snow and ice on the way home, just make sure to brush them off before driving and after driving!
