THDUKE got rear ended today on the LIE

Today on my way home on the LIE eastbound I was stopped in traffic then got rear-ended by a Ford Explorer which was rear-ended by a person who is in the assigned risk insurance pool. Explorer because its high plowed right into the boot lid and the left rear quarter, I was pushed into the car in front which got pushed into the car in front, in all a 3 car and 2 SUV collision. The cars in front of me took off before the cop arrived. Car was towed to Gregg and Bills collision.
Man I finally got the car running geat and now this.

Damn man that sucks. First a local guy screws you on your motor rebuild and then you get it running like a banshee and now this. I agree with Jan life sucks at times.

Hopefully you can get it fixed and back to enjoying it.

Down but not out I hope, looks like boot hatch, left rear quarter, rear bumper and battery box will all need replacement, also a new front bumper, rest of car looks fine it should look like new when they are finished with it.

A nearly identical incident happened to me in June. An F350 tow truck with a Suburban in tow hit a Ford Explorer in the rear, pushed it into me, and pushed me into a Silverado.

All this happened at about 40 mph approaching an Xway off ramp.

The damage was about $12,500 and took 11 weeks to repair. Progressive Insurance sucks, by the way. 15,000 miles and they wanted to fix it all with aftermarket parts. After countless brutal phone calls, they gave in. Now I'm back to original.

The beauty of the collision, besides walking away with minor bruises, was that the Explorer was high enough to smash the rear end and go right over the frame rails under the rear seats... so all damage was cosmetic except for a punctured radiator and rear wiper motor.

I found a repair shop that only does MINI, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, and Jaguar with certifications in each. They were all about doing the work right than doing it cheap, and the results show.

Good luck with the repair. Keep us posted. Hope you weren't hurt.

well... look at the bright side.... at LEAST it wasn't the M5 that got hit

I think this was the The DUKE's way of telling you he wanted a paint job after 170k miles

You are right, I was just thinking that now would be a good time to put back on the aero kit front bumper, will have to work it out with Bill pay the difference between the regular bumper and the Aero bumper.

If the M5 got hit like that it would be written off, because of the MINI design the boot took all the energy, the M5 rear end would have been gone, but my insurance pays full value + tax and tags for first 12 months, so I would just go order another one.

Pictures of the wreck

Here are a few shots from the wreck:
A full view of the rear, here you can see the impact was to the boot

See how the bottom of the boot gets shoved into the back

A better view of the boot

Just a small amount of damage to the front

A full view of the rear

A view from the front seat looking back

See right side door lines up perfectly suggesting no floor or frame damage

Also from the left side perfectly lined up

Adjuster was out to see the car today will find out tomorrow what the course of action will be, I know from over hearing hhis conversation that he would be willing to total the car if the cost reaches 75% of book value, so as long as the cost is less than 12K all will be fine.

Damn SUV was so high, your rear bumper didn't even get a chance to do it's job and absorb some of the energy from the impact.

You're really lucky you didn't get a serious neck and/or back injury !

At least the liable party has insurance, even if it is Assigned Risk. Hate to see what his premiums are going to be after this one.

Sorry about this, Trevor; glad you're OK. Bore yourself with the M5 for a while, and before you know it, thduke will be up and running.

Sorry to hear of your troubles Trevor. Sucks that once the car was finally up and running this has to happen. Seems like thduke will have lots of new parts now even with all those miles.

Meg I have a big decision to make on this, all indications at this time says that they intend to make it a write off, so I have two choices take the dollars or take the car and the dollars minus the auction guarantee price which is $4900 so that would leave me with $8K and the car, I would still need some out of pocket expenses to get THDUKE back on the road.
The RMW head and exhaust plus installation and tune that I just did last week is just about $6K which I would loose if I took the cash without the car, so I am leaning towards keeping the car and take the 8K and fix it. All the damage is sheet metal only and the adjuster is estimating that it will take 10K to repair, or I could take the money and car find an 03 that needs and engine for cheap and move everything over. So I have a very big decision to make over the weekend.

Ugh that is a big decision, especially with all you have been through with THDUKE over the last year. I know you wanted to keep that car for a long time. Keep us updated with how things play out. I just can't imagine you without THDUKE!
