Exhaust Pop and Crackle

Hey guys!! This is my first post. Last month I bought myself an '09 MCS cabrio (R57) and i love it. However, I have driven the 2011 MCS Cabrio and it popped and burbled much more consistently than my '09. I have heard that Mini changed the ecu for the 2007+ cooper s to reduce continuos injection and reduce pop and burble due to "customer complaints." I have gotten a few good pops and burbles, but I WANT MORE. Does anybody know how i can increase the exhaust popping and crackling without replacing the whole system? Possible ecu tunes? Please help!

It's all in the ECU. From what I heard dealerships don't offer that anymore. Call some tuners.

What changed in the ecu to reduce the pop and crackle by so much?

Can't answer that. But I have a 2012 R57 Cooper S and it burbles like it's Yellowstone's geysers. I believe it's less the ECU and more the Sport button. (unless the ECU and the sport button are tied together)

I was told that it does all the popping and burbling ONLY in Sport mode. So if you have a Justa MINI, then you don't get the burble.

On our R59 I noticed that it takes some time for everything to get warm enough to reach the proper pop and burble temperature. Only when I go on twisty roads with spirited driving in mind, and having driven for sometime, do I hear plenty of pop and burble. The rhythm at which the car changes speed, clutch engaging, etc... plays a big role.
On a regular daily drive it is more of a once in a while thing. It's definitely not as enjoyable. And I wish it was more consistent, present.

And yes it's a ECU timing thing with the sport function where gases are exhausted a little earlier leaving some "explosion" happening in the exhaust system itself.

See Manic for a tune. I have a 2007. ZERO pops or burbles in stock form. Now it pops like a movie theatre popcorn machine. I had DNA tune before and managed some pops at times, but nothing like I have with Manic

Nice T shirt, you can get a little more burble in a 2007-2010 MINI S in sport mode and a JCW exhaust, it will not pop an bang like a 2011+ MCS in sport mode though.

reviving a somewhat oldie

so a 15 Roadster S should get some burble in sport mode but things may need to be 'warmed up'?

it changed so many times and I never really tried to keep up.. I get my burble fix from the 79 (big twin DTM exhaust with a tweaked out 1275 and LCB) but Mrs wants to know what the sport button does on her Roadster. I tried to demo the p&b but didn't get anything, but it was a short drive.

Does anyone know if the 2011 FJCW pops and burbles? I know the JCW always did a bit more than a standard MCS, but I thought 2011 is when they coded it in for the MCS in Sport Mode. Did that apply to JCW's as well?

the JCW's always had the pop and burble coded in. from 2007-2010 (N14) the MINI Cooper S did not have pop and burble even on sport mode, it was taken out on purpose by MINI because of "complaints" from the previous generation. Then after "complaints" by the R56ers with no pop/burble, they brought it back with the LCI N18 engine. It is an ECU programmable feature, manic tune can bring it back.

Capt_bj in my experience, the car has to be warmed up before pop/burble appears. I generally drive around for 5-10 minutes then when the coolant temp is up to 90C the pops start happening

thanks for the replies to a question which is almost silly

but if/when Mrs does hear the P&C from her R59 I suspect she'll come telling me something is wrong with the car ....

so I'm just trying to prep her . .

my previous MINIs didn't do it, and while the Mini DOES, she has NEVER driven it and ride time can be measured in under 5 hours over 15 years ... and she expects weirdness from the 79 . . .

The R59 is her's ... found it and bought it herself ... and loves to go topless ... and has a heavy foot at times ... so I suspect soon she'll hear it ....

thanks again gang
