Wind screen / deflector different for 2009?

I've tried doing a search but did not find the answer.

I had an '06 convertible and am getting an '09 and want to know if the '06 wind deflector will fit in the '09?

I don't want to spend $ on it again!

The answer was just posted on MotoringFile, but not what you wanted to hear I guess.

Question: Will existing R56 wind deflector fit in the R57?. Any improvements in ways to keep the rear window clean when driving on wet, sand-treated, (new england)winter roads?

MF: Nope - you’ll need a new one. And no the rear window still gets pretty gross.

Here is the link to the whole Q&A for the new Convertible:

Well, I didnt sell my old one from my 2006 convertible. I took it out and tried it in my '09.

It fit.

I have it in now and drove around with it today with no problems.

Awesome. I guess you provide Motoringfile wrong in this case...

Post some pictures with the the windscreen setup. I'm curious what it looks like when it's being used.

Does it fold away in the boot when you're not using it?

Wow, I am totally floored!!

I bought a used one with a hole in it the size of a nickel because the owner was selling her 06 vert. I got it for free practically about 7 months ago knowing that I was going to get the new R57.

Then I found out through a few sources including the motoringfile interviews that I "had" to get a new one to fit the new cabrio.

Now, it's already been ordered. I have not sold my old one yet. I am going to definitely try the old one since it's got the checkered flag design on it. The new ones are plain black. Also, why spend the money on a new one that I could easily sell for what I paid for it. That's because I ordered it here in europe and even with the euro dollar conversion rate it still comes out to around $400 instead of the $500 as listed on the MINIUSA site.

I am so surprised that the old wind deflector fits well in the new convertible. Thanks for posting this information!!!

Here are a few pics. It does fold up to about half the size. Mine came with a carrying bag, but can easily be put in the boot without it.

Me too! Just about everything has changed in the new convertible and it's surprising that anything is still compatible.

It looks like they've made the new deflector look more upscale by chroming some of the parts and adding checkers to the bag.

The pics I posted are from the old one that I had kept from an '06 convertible, I tried it out in my '09 and it seems to fit just fine.

Looks like there is someone from the 1st Gen Convertible message board who's interesting in selling their Wind Screen for $200.

I bought one of the new style wind screen. Sticker price was a shock but the whole thing flips down and then you can fold it in half. Fits in a nice bag and can be stored in the boot.

Did some high speed freeway testing without a wind screen and it was my own personal tornado. With the screen wind was not a factor.

Has two little pockets that can be accessed via top side zipper. Checker board inserts can re removed. Took mine out and painted them black.

USD price was $492
CAD price was $550

So is the new style any different than the old style (aside from chrome and color)? Does it fold differently?

It folds the same. Has a better bag. It seems about 2-3 inches less tall but seems a little more sturdy. And of course it has the two zippered compartments.

No it is my understanding that the after market one fits over the seats and they are different on the R57. The old OEM one fits in the securing points and that didn't change.

TinaP is correct. The aftermarket deflector created by brownflyer (link here) is a completely different design from the OEM and does not use the securing points. It attaches to the front seats and allows the rear seats to be used.

So...if you order the windscreen from the factory, does it come with the bag? I am assuming so, but I was wondering where the heck I was going to store that thing.

Aftermarket deflector is coming soon for the R57

I spoke to Brownflyer about the R57 aftermarket deflector and he mentioned that he just recently got ahold of a test fit R57 to make the new deflector so the new R57 deflector should be available soon. The after market is nice for the simple fact that it still allows you to use the back seat where the OEM deflector coveres the back seat.

New and old wind deflector with photos

I have both and tried both. The old one doesn't out perform the new one by much. The new one is a tad shorter and fits very well in the back seat. The old one is almost too tight but does fit in the R57. The new one is plain black mesh. The old one has the checkered flag pattern...and a small hole but I won't go into to that now.

I am 6 feet tall or a few hairs under that height. My impression is that without any deflector I was feeling wind around and below the shoulders. So much so, that I wanted to stop to put on a light jacket. It's that cold in Germany, even with sun. I do sit with the horizontal adjustment about 4 to five presses of the crank. I don't want to sit too low because the rear visibility is still so hard to get used too.

(Also, as a side note, I felt like I had to get my eyes just above center as I look at the wind Shield (forward) so that the top edge of the wind shield glass wouldn't obstruct my view.)

The bags are extremely different from each othe. The old one is bigger and tougher than the new one. It has a carrying strap. The new one is slimmer and only has handles. Both bags fit flat in the boot.

The new one is much easier to fold, even has an orange button underneath to allow a newbie to figure out how to release the vertical screen for folding.
The new one seems lighter as well.

On to the photos and your comments/questions.
