Can someone explain to me why this is called "plastic dipping"? Aren't you just painting the trim?
The term is actually "plasti-dip". It is a brand name for a rubberized coating. I believe originally it came only in cans and you dipped your item, such as a wrench, into the can to add a protective coating on it.
Now it also comes in spray cans and you can coat pretty much anything with it and it's removable.
It's called Plasti Dipping because the compound used to color items is a peelable rubber. You can plasti dip just trim, or whole cars as done above. It was originally designed to use on tools
Being peelable is more so you can change the color when and as often as you like. Its rather cheap to dip a whole car, around 250-300 usd and will last for a decent amount of time if applied correctly. Also, you don't need to mask as much because spaces between body panels will "cut" the paint and you could just peel it off of the panels you don't want it on.
Looks awesome! I am in the process of doing "project black out" on the Lil Red Rocket. I went to the local Ace hardware today here and asked it they had plastidip. I was gonna go that route but since I am in the Phils it is slow to get things done. The local car wrap guy here said he could not do the wraps on the gas cap, door handles, headlight rings nor tint the lights. I guess I will have to order the after market 3m stick on tape covers. However I am having a hard time finding matte black side markers and matte black emblem covers. If anyone knows where I can get some covers for a 2004 let me know please
Tomorrow I will do the beltline blackout. I am getting all the windows tinted including the windshield with the magic tint. Yes tinted windshields are legal in the Phils! We have our Ford Expedition with full window tint.
