Rear wiper arm removal-how to?

Hi Y'all...haven't posted a while. Been playing with other cars. Recently my rear wiper stopped "working". Motor turns the shaft OK, but wiper doesn't move. Noticed the plastic arm was was cracked where it surrounds the shaft (bolt). The plastic arm had come undone from the center metal piece which is "pressed??? onto the shaft.

Picked up a new wiper arm at the dealer and went to install it today but either what remains after the plastic is taken off is welded on there and I mean REALLY good, or I am going about this the wrong way.

(edit: does the small teeny-weeny squirter extension tube come off separately some how?)

I got the 13mm nut off after a bit - it wasn't easy.....I tried using several doses of a strong penetrating fluid (PB blaster) but it was -3C here....may have frozen a bit, LOL/////

I also reefed (pulled) on what remained with vice-grip pliers and at the same time was tapping on it quite firmly and rapidly with a ball-peen hammer but there is no way that knurled piece is coming off the shaft. ...If I knew for certain it comes off I might try a 3-jaw puller but I am sure I would destroy the squirter nozzle. It appears to be very small, lightweight and obviously hollow (aluminum?)....

What remains actually looks that it is part of the shaft and disappears down into the grommet/window interface.

Are the new and old arms different>?
Some searches reveal some guys removing their wipers (why, I don't know)...maybe road salt has welded mine into place? I do drive it once in a while in the winter.

Pictures are:
- rear wiper shaft with knurled piece either stuck to the shaft or part of the shaft.

-Old wiper arm (pic doesn;'t show it, but it shows the knurling marks imprinted on the plastic.

-New wiper arm. Metal piece appears about the right size to fit over the shaft, but certainly the hole diameter is too small to fit over what remains (the knurled part currently on the car.)
...help ! ;-) LOL

Back up plan is to cut it off with a dremel.....hope it doesn't come to that...

Lets see if I can get the 3 pix I took to post.....thanks for any advice.

Car is a 2009 Justa, Canadian car if it makes any difference.

Thanks ! Mike

Really? Nobody has ever serviced or removed their rear wiper arm before?
What about a diagram?

There is a nut underneath where the sprayer is, start there.

If you read my post, I already have the nut off !
I just want to know if what remains on the shaft is PART of the shaft, or has jammed itself on there, no doubt due to salt corrosion.

wiper arms are typically pressed on ....

what most people replace is just the rubber or the 'blade'

I THINK the nut you are looking at is the nut that keeps the shaft in place

and you use a tool - essentially a gear puller - to get the old arm off and a then must press a new arm on . . .

"These OEM Automotive Tools windshield wiper arm pullers are designed to easily remove wiper arms on most domestic and foreign vehicles. Simply turn the **** for fast work. They feature a forged body for strength, their compact design works great in tight spaces, and they will not damage your wiper arm or hood cowling during use. " .com/ $11

should be available at most ANY auto part store . .

maybe that's the part you press on to????

If it was my car, I would try splitting it with a dremel. Maybe just a slot on the top so that some penetrating oil or WD-40 can get in there. Like you said, you have the squirter on top of the shaft, so can't press it off.

Good luck,
Mike

Thanks for the sensible posts (LOL)....Nut is off and has been off for days.
Arm is off....and has been off for days.
What apparently remains is actually part of the wiper arm assy. IE: The inner "spacer", "fat washer" or "threadless nut" that was once-upon-a-time part of the wiper arm.(pressed on and melted into the plastic arm at time of mfr)
No, you are correct, I cannot pull it off with a puller as I would destroy the wiper nozzle in 2 seconds flat. I can't pry underneath it well (Hey, I've tried) without either denting the car or breaking the window.
I can't heat it with a propane torch without melting the grommets that hold it in place and prevent water from taking up residence inside my car.

My plan now is to take at it with a dremel first chance I get in 2-3 days.

I guess my distant backup plan would be to remove the entire motor assy and buy a new one. I am sure MINI will want oodles of cash for that however, so that is a really really distant 2nd choice !

I will report back.

Thanks all !

Oh-and thanks for the great link to the wiper motor assy for purchase. There was one picture there that 100% confirmed what I suspected, but did not know.
THANKS !!!!!!

WOO-HOO! Tonight (in the dark using various flashlights) I was able to cut off the "insert/nut/fat washer" dooey using a dremel like tool. Thank goodness. There was no other way to get this off, that I could see.

Once I had a nice fat notch cut in the piece I could pry it open with a good screwdriver and pliers. It was aluminum-oxide welded to the shaft like nobody's business. (white crystalline?/dusty stuff for you southerners that don't get their roads salted). Think of it as rust mixed with epoxy and sugar, LOL !

I put a thin coating of copper grease on the shaft (after I brushed it clean with a brass brush) and put the new arm and blade on.

Happy happy. Thanks to those who helped out.

Capt_BJ had the right idea above....they're a few dollars at AutoZone or Advanced. No drama.....Good to have around. If you use it on the front driver side wipe you might have to replace the ****/bolt with a regular bolt due to tight clearance.

The rear is a nozzle at the end of the bolt, do not think that will work there.
Nut has to come off first I believe.
After buying a new wiper assembly indeed the ferrel metal insert does indeed need to come off the shaft.

Torque on nut

Has anyone seen value of torque to be applied to install wiper arm?
This is a motor that is holding the shaft still?
Just wondering, evidently this is one of those remove every couple of years or it will not be.

A little grease on the shaft & splines.
A drop of 3-in-1 on the wiper arm pivot.
Just 'snug' the nut up - no need for a torque wrench or any force.
Yes, repeat every year or two.

Lisle puller

After soak with solvent...this is the best tool for tapered shaft/spline.
