2007 MCS cold start issue (20 degrees Fahrenheit)

Starts up normal but after about 10 seconds or so it sounds like it may die. After the hiccup it runs just fine.

HPFP has already been replaced about 4k ago.

This only happens when it's really cold outside.

Any ideas?

Sounds like the timing chain, and symptoms of the HPFP again...

Yeah it sounds like the timing chain is whipping around and not properly tensioned causing your cam timing to change which is why the engine wanting to die. Has your MCS ever had the timing chain assembly replaced? If not Mini is covering most VIN numbers that fall on MCS 2007-2011. I kept waiting for you to pop the hood open in the video, sorry about your troubles.

WOW! That is the "death-rattle" I have heard about? That is a serious issue, for sure! I thought my direct-injection was noisey esp when cold. This gives a whole new meaning to the term "noisey"! I really hope that Mini warranties this one! Good luck, dude!

Oh my.. The timing chain was replaced at 30k and it now has 63k. They wouldn't replace it again would they??

Thanks for everyone's feedback!

Just to keep you guys posted, it has been much colder here in Kansas City and it hasn't had a hiccup since that video. I do have a service scheduled on Wednesday, so I'll keep you guys posted.

I wouldn't be driving your Mini because if the chain breaks or runs off the cams your looking at a new or rebuilt engine. And I thought it was cold here in California, definitely a very dry coldness, humidity is very low.

I would love to been in California, definitely jealous. If it was already replaced at another mini dealer from the previous owner, do you think they would replace it again? Since an actual mini dealer replaced it and failed again?

Could it possibly be the HPFP again?

It also has an oil leak since mini last changed the oil about a thousand miles ago. That's why I'm taking it there in Wednesday.

Keeping my fingers crossed that this isn't going to cost me..

What happens when you rev the engine a little bit? Thin is when Mini replaced your tensioner they used the part number that has since gown through at least 4 updates on the tensioner, Mini also has it manufactured by a different manufacture now.

There is also a chance that they just replaced the tensioner at the previous service, rather than the entire assembly. Since it was done at the dealer, they should be able to see the details of work done.

You're probably right. It's in for service now, just waiting on that call that I know isn't going to be pleasant. I'll keep you all posted.

make sure to stand your ground. If its the chain and tensioner then they owe you a new one. I dont care if it has been replaced 20 times already

Well I just got the call back.

They said the timing chain didn't show any signs of wear or damage. In fact they couldn't tell why it had a hiccup.

I originally took it in because I had an oil leak after a thousand miles of them changing the oil.

They told me the oil leak is the oil filter housing gasket and the turbo oil supply line. Costing me $1200 because they would have to pull the front end.

For that price, I'm thinking about just picking up a winter beater and parking the Mini and fixing on my own. He said the parts were only $200.

What do you guys think?

If you have the ability to repair it on your own, for the price difference I'd say do it.

Or maybe try getting different quotes from independent shops as well.

Yeah I feel confident replacing it myself. Been searching and can't find a detailed DIY. Know of any?
