Cone filter

Hey I was wondering if a regular cone filter would fit in the factory air box from the s&jcw?

A regular cone filter won't work with the factory airbox on an S but I'm not sure about a jcw.

Yes it would, provided that you will need to replace the upper air box with an OEM JCW CAI. The CAI kit will come with a paper filter but can be replaced a cone filter. I currently have a K & N universal cone filter RU 3130. Car's throttle response is very noticeable and gas mileage is slightly better.

Yea I've read about getting the upper part of the jcw box, but I cannot find that anywhere. Could the S airbox be modified to fit a cone? What about running with no lid?

Well I got mine from Bavauto for $275.XX but you can find it elsewhere less than that. Unfortunately, I do not think you can custom a non-JCW upper housing to hold a cone filter. What comes into mind however is to insert a sleeve in the pipe and allow to stick out but about 3/4" so that the cone filter can clamp on it.

Price-wise most open filters range from $230 up. I have come across some articles on this site that with an open filter it tends to pull the hot air from the engine compartment versus from the snorkel where the colder air comes from.

Personally I prefer the enclosed (JCW) intake for more efficiency plus it gives me a stock and less aggressive look.

With all of the sizes available from K&N, it should be very simple to set up an enclosed cone filter in your factory air cleaner with no or very little modification. I also ran my R56S with a huge K&N cone that I had laying around, sitting in the stock air box without the lid. I eventually got tired of looking at the lower part of the air cleaner and just removed it. I made a bracket to support the air filter/MAF assembly so it doesn't ride on the intake manifold. Easy peasy.

If you like the look of the JCW air cleaner, that's great, but $275 for an air cleaner lid is crazy.

Turbo cars heat the air charge going through the turbo, and a few degrees difference at the air cleaner inlet won't make any difference from a performance standpoint.

What size air filter would fit inside the factory s airbox? So I could just leave the factory lid off and run it that way?

I looked at the lid and it seems the tube going into it is connected. Would it be safe disconnecting that and taking off the lid?

If you want to leave the OE air box lid in place, measure the dimensions of the inside of the air cleaner, then follow the link I posted to the K&N site and see what they have that will work. I would have done this, but I like the sound of the turbo and DV through the cone filter. As Joeygonz posted, you'd have to add some sort of nipple to clamp the filter to.

If you don't care about the lid, then remove the MAF from it altogether, then remove it from the air cleaner. Put the MAF back on your intake tube, then get yourself a 3 inch coupler and a 3 inch 90 degree elbow out of the CAI parts in the ricer aisle at a parts store. Put the elbow on the MAF and your cone on the elbow. Done.

" Hey I was wondering if a regular cone filter would fit in the factory air box from the s&jcw? " Unless you have the JCW Tuning Kit top lid. You would have to measure the JCW tube filter and see what fits. I would go with the Pipercross if I were you, no rattles and fits that box.

Its you decide to go to the JCW Tuning Kit top , I can here more turbo noise through that filter. And its a closed intake ( cold air ), so you will not get heat from the engine or dirt and junk from that area.

If You have the factory Panel Cooper S or Factory JCW it takes the same panel filter: Drop in.
Which there are aftermarkets available also. Like K&N , Pipercross, aFe.. ect..
