Any Non-S Coopers with Oil Consumption Issues

Just thought I'd compile some separate data. I don't know of many non-S's that consume oil. My 08 with near 100k miles never consumed a drop, and it was autox-ed. If it's a problem with the direction injection, well the non-S coopers don't have DI so it shouldn't be that. Frankly break-in procedure shouldn't matter all that much unless there was a flaw from the factory.

So, have at it. Who's got issues? At least for me, none here on my 08, and not enough data on my 13 yet.

My '10 has 41k miles and doesn't appear to burn any oil.

Our 08 R55 N12 engine doesn't appear to use any, now at 55,000 miles. Mobil 1 0w40 changed every 5,000.

Turbocharged cars tend to use more oil than naturally-aspirated cars as well, so that may be a factor.

25K miles, no oil use that I can tell so far.

^ right - i've got a turbocharged weekend car, even that doesn't consume any oil either.

it's early, but i do think a lot of the oil consumption issues are almost strictly with the Cooper S's. we'll see, based on response in this thread.

Added less than a half quart one time in the first month or two, and I pretty much followed the owner's manual recommended break-in. No oil added since, but I am changing the oil/filter every six months. Overall my non-S uses less oil than the Jetta that I drove before, using a similar oil change maintenance schedule.

My 2008 does use oil quicker than expected . I have to check it the first of every month and typically have to add at least a quart.

My niece's 2007 Justa burns about 2 quarts between oil changes. The dealership said that was normal (?) and told her just to check the oil level frequently. I don't remember how many miles she has on the odometer (I only see her 3-4 times a year), but I do remember telling her that she should be getting the oil & filter changed twice as often as MINI recommends, especially since most of her driving is in the city.

My '10 with 52k on it burns about 1 quart every 5k miles. That was using Joe Gibbs DT40. I recently switched to Royal Purple 0w-40, and I noticed the MPG jumped up 3-4 mpg. I don't know if that's because it's not as cold as of late, or because the Royal Purple is thinner, but I welcome that change. I'm at about 1200 miles on this oil change and The dipstick still reads full. I always change at 10k, no point in changing earlier if I'm adding 2 quarts in that time.

^ interesting, i've heard mixed reviews about joe gibbs. i've always stayed away from royal purple, as evos tend to not like that stuff.

keep us posted.

where there any changes to the new justa motor that would explain a difference in oil consumption?

Other folks have used DT 40 with excellent results, I just think it may be a little thick which is why I tried it, to ward off some oil consumption. I use the DT 40 in my Z4 and have been successful with 10,000 mile oil change intervals with no oil consumption, it can be used as an extended OCI lubricant. I don't know that oil is going to fix whatever goes on with these cars. My consumption may have gone down also because I've stopped running it up to 5000 RPM lol.

Always synthetic. Its a performance engine. I accept that as a viable explanation. As long as I check the oil level, the car is happy. I have 85,000 miles on it and its performed well. Probably better than my 2012. I do like its performance better than my 2012.

2008 Justa, burns about a quart in 4000 miles, gotta keep an eye on it. Mostly city driving, a lot of shifting. Mobile 1 synthetic.

Mine has 106k miles and consumes quite a bit of oil. So far that rate seems to be about 1/4 to 3/4 quart a week. Usually covers about 300-400 miles. Mobil 1 5-30. The car doesn't appear to be leaking it, but looks like it sees a good amount of blow by. Thinking of either replacing the valve cover or looking into a catch can.

I will agree that I use oil only if I extend my oil change intervals. I change it every 3000 miles and no consumption, but if I stretch that to 4000 or 4500 I certainly see consumption increase.

I have 56k miles on mine and I have never needed to add oil between oil changes. However, mine used to go through coolant like crazy. The coolant has not been as much of an issue in the past year. I wonder if there's a difference in oil consumption between automatic and manual base coopers?
