Reinstalling stock shift knob

Has anyone experienced reinstalling a stock shift knob? I can't seem to get it back locked in.

Did you re-attach it to the boot first?

Did yours come off intentionally or by accident? I banged 2nd gear a little too hard one time and the knob came right off the stick (but the boot was still attached!). I just slapped it back down and it was fine. Sure caught me by surprise just a little bit, tho. But that was last week's Mini that had a center arm rest that really didn't allow a good straight pull back for 2nd and 4th; I left the arm rest out of this week's Mini, and exactly for that reason.

If the key that's inside the knob is lined up with the slot in the shift lever, it really shouldn't take more than a good hard rap with the palm of your hand, to pop the knob back into place.

Ran across that on a friends clubbie. Same deal. On the R56 the ring at the top of the boot is slightly higher than the clearance you need for the shift nob.

I honestly did not see how to adjust that boot ring.

I know it is addressed on Doug Whalen's site http://www.whalenshiftmachine.com/

I can't speak for Doug but my guess is if you called him he would give you some tips

DUH! noticed that Doug has already chimed in above!
