Terratrip Rally Computer + Speed Sensor Help

Hi all,

So I'm hoping to get involved in rally sport with my R56 Cooper and will be getting my feet wet with TSD rallies. To have the "upper hand" I got a hold of a Terratrip 303+ rally computer and have big expectations.

The good news is, everything is wired and hooked up correctly, except the speed sensor - I still need to get the probe to count distance. I currently have both the wheel probe (counts wheel rotation from steel bolt) and DSI probe (taps into factory speed sensor). As a DIY kind of guy, the wheel probe was proving to be difficult to make a decent bracket, so I have high hopes for the DSI probe as I am handy with electrical work.

Anyways, I've already tried to tap the rear passenger-side sensor. I thought I had the speed sensor, but it may be the ABS sensor (which I was told won't work) as a loose connection sent ABS, Runflat, DSC warnings etc. through the roof. The wires I tried were yellow+black stripe and yellow+brown stripe PAST the blue connector mounted to the underbody (for those who have seen this area of the car). The tap appeared to be unsuccessful as the rally computer didn't pick up anything, but the computer/probe its self IS wired correctly and does pick up electrical pulses.

So here is where I need help: To anyone that knows a thing or two about the speed sensors on the car, where is a tap point that I would be able to get a speed pulse from the sensor?

After the sensor? At the engine? In the dash? ANY direction would be appreciated: wire locations, theory, past experience, where to go for help, etc.

I appreciate anyone taking the time to read this and hope there is someone out there that can help out!

Thanks,

Patrick

Some of the BWM CCA guys are really into Rally and may be of help. The editir of Roundel is a renowned TSD rally addict. He can be reached at satch at roundel dot org

I am currently in the process of checking a wire that comes out of the wiring bundle that is located behind the plastic trim, to the right of the passenger's right foot. I was forwarded an electrical schematic that identifies a series of 3.5mm diameter wires (yellow wire with a thin green stripe on them) that carry speed signals from the ABS sensors at all four wheels to a "Body Control Module" and then send one wire to the ABS control module up under the hood (also a yellow wire with green stripe).

Here's a link to photos I took tonight:

This wire already had some "excess" length coming out of the main bundle/module and is, I think, tapped into whenever a MINI Navi system is installed by a dealer. Hopefully others may be able to confirm. It IS an excellent spot for a rally computer signal!

Regards,

Brian

Bump! Did anyone try this? I just picked up a Terratrip 202 today. I'm curious about all of the wiring points used.

I have since used said wire on a 2002 MCS as well... can't comment on '07+ models though.

Also, we had to set our computer to divide the signal frequency by 8 before road calibrating.

Yeah, won't work on the R56 :-(
