I"m driving my MINI for 3 days, and I can't tell you how many times I've sped way over the limit without realizing, because of:
A) Where the speedometer is located
B) Because the ride is so smooth you don't even know how fast you're going.
I really have to watch myself....whew!!! (I live in Hollywood, FL. by the way)
I only go 70 in my Bronco.. Because it's lifted with huge tires and lockers.. Plus 70mph gets me about 12-14 mpg.. But in the Mini I feel like I am a grandpa if I go below 90 mph

Are you referencing the dinner plate speedo or the digital readout in the tach?
I'm not sure that it makes much difference as I also found myself running up and over the limit very easily on test drives - I am still in the acquisition phase!!
Yes I find it way too easy to drive fast in this. I don't realize it sometimes because it rides the same at higher speeds as it does in lower ones and I don't get the feeling I'm really going that fast.
Everyone else just seems to be going slower.

After I got used to my MINI's digital speed display, when I drive my wife's car I have some difficulties reorienting my eyes to the analog display. However, I agree that it is very easy to violate the speed laws. I got my radar detector and I watch my speed all the time. I have not had tickets in my MINI yet.
These cars are designed to run comfortably at autobahn speeds. Of course, half the people in the US think you'll be sucked into a black hole if you drive that fast ("What are you thinking!?! Risking your life and the lives of others like that!?! You should be ashamed!?! And so on...).
Gawd I wish we in North Carolina could petition to be annexed by Germany. No more problems.

I am always watching for the fuzz but I am sure I will get caught eventually...
Same thing in my town, sux! Even the highways is a pretty conservative 65-75mph depending on where you're at.
But yes, it is ridiculously easy to speed in the MINI. Made a highway run today and found myself just under 100 at one point. Took my foot off the gas and got into the right lane quick!

For the first year I had my '06 R53, my wife rarely if ever drove it, probably never drove it on the autobahn (she loves her own car too much), and she always complained when I got it up to cruising speed and the howling started.
Well, in mid Dec, she took it for a drive up to Koln, a few hours away by autobahn. When she came back, she finally confessed -- she thought I drove fast with her and the kids in the car, just to show off or something. On that trip, though, she realized that, really, the car wanted to cruise at 90 to 100 mph. And yes, the car howled at her, too.

What was your last car? The wheelbase on a MINI is proportionally (wheels to rest of the car) large compared to most other or "average" cars. This makes the MINI feel like a larger car, which in turn provides a different sensation of speed, leading unfamiliar drivers to feel as though they are going slower than the actually are. I keep my tach set with the speed display while I'm driving makes it much easier and more natural to keep track of, after a few thousand miles my sensation adapted, and now at 80k anything else seems strange
Also just an FYI, not feeling the right speed and not having checked your speedometer recently enough generally doesn't work well as a get out of a ticket excuse. V1 has prevented me needing to have an excuse for a long time, works great for friendly reminder.
I've been lucky so far (came really close tonight after wizzing by a patrol car...yikes!), but can't help it. Too easy to be speedy in a MINI!!!
I'm just saving all my spare change in a jar in preparation for the first ticket!

I also use the speedo readout on the tach, only problem is, when I get low on gas or wiper fluid, it get's cancelled out with whatever warning pops up, I've gotten to really rely on the tach. In hindsight, maybe I should have gotten the nav.

You do realize you can change the display in the tach face so you have a digital readout of the speed? Press the button on the end of the left stalk a couple of times to cause the digital speed to show. It will default to it after that.

A VW Beetle....2000. Not sure what 2008 Beetles are like, but you KNEW when you picked up speed in my last car, and it was like I was literally WAITING for a cop to pull me over.
I need to make the speed display on my TACH....that's for sure. Right now it's just showing gas.
I got my first ticket in 15+ years, after I had my Mini MCS for 2 months. I hope it's the only one.
What is going to happen when I do my JCW upgrade later this year? Oh-oh
