I just bought a 2007 MCS last month, and last night, my wife's 2004 Acura TL was stolen from our driveway while we were asleep. I live in a gated community in the suburbs and the car was locked and had a factory alarm. Still, it was stolen without making enough noise to wake me or any neighbors. The police told me that Acuras and Hondas are very easy to steal.
That got me thinking ... how easily stolen are MINIs? I don't have the factory alarm or lojack or anything like that, currently (although maybe I should get one, or both). I tried a little Googling to no avail. Does anyone know if a MINI is a particularly easy or difficult car for a thief to steal?

My insurance on the Mini was $468 and agent did not show a "high" risk for theft. Compare that to the $2,100 for a 2006 350Z that Skeeter replaced, and Skeeter is a bargain. I have a 2004 Mustang GT that has lowjack and after the second year they infrom me that I have to pay $75 each year to have it serviced/checked to make sure it is functional. So not real happy with LoJack at the present.

The thing to remember is if someone who knows what they are doing wants to steal your car, theres nothing you can do about it. Oh the other hand someone who doesn't have a clue like a punk kid. Has little or no shot at stealing your mini.

The only way to steal a MINI is to have your key or a roll back tow truck.

And not only that, all of the ones 215 - 230 had NO instances of the vehicle being stolen, are not really the types of vehicles 'normal' people have, or have parked on a street / driveway anyway, and have low production numbers.
On the other hand, shouldn't we be upset that thieves DON'T want to steal our cars? Cmon, what's wrong with them?
Last year when I had windshield #3 replaced (currently on #5), the insurance adjuster said (since they came out in 2002) they had yet to have a stolen MINI. That's pretty good in an area where the locals think we're the number one stolen car area of N. America.
But the relative population of MINIs are very small compared to, say Hondas or Chryslers (top two stolen brands?).

The theft rate ranking is by thefts per thousand vehicles produced, so they are comparable. Also, the number 2 most stolen vehicle on the list had less than half the production numbers for that model year than the MINI did.
We live in Fresno Ca. ( it was the car theft capitol in the country ) and I haven't heard of a MINI being stolen. If they take Lil Miss at least I will know where it is. Click on the link below. It is like Low Jack but uses HAM radio.

wow that is really cool. Don't know if I'd want the link to be public though. A stalker could follow your MINIs every move.

Geez, and I thought my cell phone was an electronic leash!!
Actually that is pretty damn cool, I've never even heard of it before. It would be awesome to know where your car was, if stolen.
Here, unless it is made by John Deere or Case, it is pretty safe.
I think we have to differentate between the two catorigies of Minis The R56 is an electronics nightmare, with the Keyfob , computer etc. Any one who has the smarts to get around that has to be good.

Why would you put the location of your car on the Internet. Anybody would know where it is. If it were stolen, is the antenna something hidden or one of the antennas that is obviously out of place for the car?
I dont get it. I'm not sure I would want to advertise where I am to every car thief who can find that website. Worse, one click and up comes your name, address. Email addy, and GPS coordinates I can even see if its raining on your head

I'm a Licensed Ham Radio operator - to do any transmitting on the bands allowed by the FCC you would first need a Ham radio License. There is a test for this, fairley technical. The FCC could fine you up to $5,000 PER TRANSMISSION if caught with out that license, and the FCC is getting very good at tracking down people. The APRS system you see at that link is used a lot by emergency communicators while volunteering during a local , but can be national, emergency. We are called out usually by the local heads of emergency management. We are usually called out for Tornados, Hurricanes ,Earth quakes , Nuclear events , any event that strains the local/state/nations emergency communication systems (Telephone/Cell phones/police and fire radio communications). We can also be activated by a Govenors declaration of a state of emergency or in the case of a National Emergency by the President of the United States.
Didn't mean to drone on - or accuse anyone of anything-just thought I'd tell you the seriousness of trying to use the Ham Radio Bands out side of the FCC Regulations and why we Ham's use this software with our radios and TNC's (Terminal Node Controllers)

actually the R53 has the same type of electronic security system. The key has a chip in it.
