MINI Moke SUV in Autocar magazine

This weeks Autocar magazine in the UK says BMW have signed off a new MINI Moke (SUV) which is featured on the magazines front cover. They say the Moke will use a new floorpan to allow for 4wd and later for a new bigger MINI -'MAXI' . Also that a MINI Pickup may be on the way for the US market. They go on to say that these models will probably be made in the USA as Oxford UK will already be at full capacity.

You know, MC2 had a rather thoughtful article about MINI needing to emulate the Corvette rather than the Porsche...I think a small mini pickup could be cool, but I hope they don't go crazy with Mini "mutations."

I really hope they don't do an SUV, I will lose all respect for BMW. The Mini is the anti-SUV, SUVs are lame. Don't we have enough of these stupid trucks crowding our highways now?

How big can they make the MINI SUV be???
It will be stupid and it doesn't matter how they make it.

A big MINI SUV will be stupid, coming from MINI.
A small MINI SUV will still be stupid, because SUVs are supposed to be big.

MINI SUV is such an oxymoron.

My back yard

"Rumor has it that if BMW gives the "Moke" and "Pickup" versions the green light, both of these will be built @ BMW's South carolina assembly plant (Home of the BMW Z4 roadster and X5 SUV)"

That'd be great, I live 30 miles from that plant (Greenville, SC) so maybe I could start rooting around their trash dumpsters and start collecting parts. Then I could build a mutant MINI of my own, like that Johnny Cash song "54/55/56/57/58/59 Cadillac". As far as 4WD goes, I wouldn't mind seeing a WRX-style rally MINI. Just please don't build anything like the Subaru Baja.

Nice.

I already drive a "Frankin-MINI"... an '05 MCS with '04 lights and Cooper wheels.

It won't be an a real suv. If MINI does build one, it will probably be a subcompact crossover. Like the Smart ForFour or something.

Anyone think that a MINI SUV might actually be pulled off the right way? I have my doubts, but.. Couldn't a Moke be really cool?

..Anyone?

A MINI "SUV" (I can't bare to call it that) could be part of an ongoing trend towards redefining (or expanding) what an SUV means. I think MINI can pull it off, but I'll be stickin' with a coupe thanks.

A lifted MINI would have fantastic approach and departure angles for a 4x4. They need to forget the SUV as a MINI is too small but it would be a great Jeep Wrangler Killer. Think Suzuki Samurai with style, power and decent on-road handling.

Maybe... but those who do not remember the failures of the past will be doomed to repeat them.
