Spark Plug Replacement

I need help!!
I confirmed the correct plugs for my 2008 Clubman R55 with an N12 Engine is Mini# 12-12-0-035-933 and is Beru 12ZR6SP03
But cannot confirm the Plug socket needed.
I think it is a 12 Point 14mm (thin Wall)
Can anyone confirm?

If they are the same plugs as in the hardtop then yes the 12 point 14mm thin wall socket should work. I got mine off Amazon a while back.

I got the Spark Plug socket 14mm 12 point thin wall from eBay for $13.86 that includes shipping.
Worked great.
I put in the new plugs the specs say torque should be 20Nm.
Research showed this to be 14.75 Ft-lbs or 177 in-lbs.
The old plugs looked worn and great color.
The old plugs had a Gap that increased to almost 2mm (It should be 1mm).

Its right here and currently on sale, incorporates a magnetic ring that holds the plug when you take it out. Use it with a medium length 3/8th extension.

And the N12 ( Cooper NON S ) Spark plugs right here. 12120035933

How useful would this manual be for a 2011 Countryman? I assume lots of it are similar.

Pretty useful as it has more N18 ( Cooper S / JCW ) engine and N16 ( Cooper ) engine MINI shared components from the R56 R57 R55. Does not have the 4 wheel drive talk, but some stuff is similar

Thanks

Anyone know if there are any tricks with the spark plug sockets? Got one from Way and it seems like it wants to grab but doesn't, like it's short.

Don't know about that socket. But the schwaben ones linked above goes in all the way in to catch the 12 point neck. Maybe you left a piece of metal or something in the that socket that blocked it ?

I was looking at that one as I liked the potential for the magnetic bit, but you won't have it until early April according to the page. May have to give it a shot anyway.

It seems close in appearance et al to the Schwaben, just no magnetic hold. It uses 3 leaf springs of sorts to hold the plug instead. Nothing's in the well that I can see except the spark plug. When I put a bit of down pressure on it it seems to be turning but whenever I check the plug hasn't moved.

It definitely sounds like the socket is not going down far enough. Is the socket binding on the sides before it goes all the way down onto the plug?

Not that I can tell. No problems in the tube, I think I can feel it snap at least partly on top of the spark plug. With some pressure it feels like it's catching something when turned but nothing actually happens. So only thing I can think of is a short socket. Or, somehow, long spark plugs?

The reason I ask is before I knew about a thin walled socket I used a regular one. It felt like it was seated on the spark plug and was a little difficult to turn, so I thought the plug threads may have been buggered up. What I discovered is the socket was not on the plug and I got that socket wedged in the hole and it was a bear to get it out. It was late at night and the wife needed the Mini the next morning to go to work. I found a set of 3 different size sockets at Walmart and one fit the Mini perfect.

Oi! Sounds like a close call. Thanks for the tip. I tried a regular spark plug socket I have and it wouldn't even fit in the well. This one was ordered specifically for changing R56 plugs so I'd hope it'd be the right size. I'll probably end up ordering the other one from ECS in a few days when they're back in stock to compare.

I would try putting a new spark plug into the socket you got and make sure that the 12 sided plug fits fully into the socket. I can't imagine that this socket will not work if it was sold specifically to work with our MINI's.

Aelwulf , did you get our new socket and try, I hope the head of the 12 point on the spark plug is not damaged either.

Not yet, it's now showing not in stock until April 10th on your site.

scott13: Yeah, I'll be doing that once I get a chance. I'm hoping tomorrow night before kiddos have to hit the sack.

Got a second to check it out in the garage this afternoon. The socket does indeed seem to be too short. Placed over one of the new Brisk plugs waiting to be installed it looked to be almost a half-inch too short to engage the plug to turn it. It's this socket:

http://www.waymotorworks.com/spark-p...-r59-mini.html

ECS, could you link to the one you have for an R56 JCW with the N14 engine? The one linked above has once again pushed out shipping date to the 14th. I'd rather not order and play a waiting game with no discernible end point.

Thanks all for the input.

Edit: found out why it doesn't fit. Not sure what type of plug it is but it's not the typical shape for the socket. I had to get a 5/8" / 16mm to try and get them, and that would be needed for the new ones. I'm curious what plugs are in it since not stock.
