2011 MCCS N18 - ignition coil failures

Ignition coil on #3 failed at 45k (warranted). Coil on #1 failed at 57k - no warranty, coils cost $77 ea. I purchased three, since I need a reliable vehicle. Alex Mini dealer was all smiles when I handed over $300 for coils and spark plugs.

What's the deal on these ignition coils? Why are critical emission-control parts failing so early?
I own other brands of vehicles that NEVER eat coils.

This is a 2011 Mini Cooper Clubman S turbo with the N18 motor, A/T.
