For me it was mostly the looks of it, but with two "little ones" - the Mini-Poopers - it made a lot of sense, plus I like and use the roof rails witha Thule car topper to hold the extra stuff on long vacations - which we've done plenty of since we got it. Took delivery in Feb 2009 and now three years later it has just over 40K of very trouble free motoring.

It compliments our Audi Allroad wagon nicely, but I'm afraid the Audi doesn't get to do many trips any more, the MINI's 34 mpg vs the Audi's 20 tips the scales for me!

I think I'd rather have the top opening hatch tho rather than the barn doors, like the Countryman. They're more in the way than useful to me.
And even with the third door, it's tough to strap one of the dogs in the seat behind me on a trip, there's a reason the Countryman sells as well as it does! Still, I really like the looks and the driving dynamics of my Clubby.

My Vectra was getting old and the road tax was getting mental at £250 a year and I saw my clubbie on a dealers web site with a fantastic spec so i called my wifes dealer and said "ME want YOU get" My wife had a mini, so why not and the tax is only £120 a year! Best car i ever had!!

Previously I had an 03 plate Gen One hatchback.
I absolutely loved that motor my all time favourite car of all time.
I have to be honest and say I didn't like the styling of the gen two hatches as much so when my mini needed trading in wanted something completely different.
What could be more different than a clubbie.
Loved it's quirky styling and the added boot space really useful as a Priimary school teacher and have to carry loads of stuff in it for my job.

I chose my Clubman S because:

I rarely see any modified R55's anywhere, and I wanted something that isn't seen every which way.
The extended wheelbase gives more stability IMO.
The added interior room was key because I need to haul my DJ equipment and essential gear to the airport for my gigs.

Oh, and the R55 is way more sleeper... Many Audi's and WRX's have learned the hard way.

Dogs! I have always admired Minis but have large dogs. The clubby was the perfect solution.
(Speaking of tax, my bad for not researching my new city's exorbitant car tax having lived in a no car tax state for eight years. $120 a MONTH!!! for the clubby. Moving asap!)

in the uk we pay tax yearly and it is based on emissions. engine size.. fuel economy. my dopper is just twenty pounds a year which the lowest tax for a car in the uk.

Love my Clubman

I choose the Clubman for a few reasons one the dealership had a very lightly used (when I bought it) 2010 S that I got at what they had in the vehicle. Also the extra room makes it a great touring and road trip car for me and my wife. My friends have hardtops and countrymans but for my commute and fun the clubman is great.

I wanted to be able to pick my parents up from the airport in it. Traded in my 04 Honda Pilot (19mpg) for my chocolate Clubby. I have never been happier. I have trunk space, fuel milage, and a back seat when I need it. Plus the son of gun is whip fast, and handles smartly.
