I really doubt that and am wondering if you have yours running British gallons on fuel indicator. Before you go "uh uh," I'll share my experience with you. I drive my Clubman on the highway all the time. I live alone and therefore, never carry a passenger. There is never anything heavier than my lunch in the car. I've been hypermiling for over 11 years. My car has a normally aspirated 4-cylinder with a stick shift. I always gently bring the car up to 55 mph. Everyone on the highway passes me but I don't care. I just avoid DROPPING below 55 for safety/courtesy reasons. I always let the car coast when pulling off the highway. I always run 91 through the gas tank. My car hit about 11,000 miles last week. My average mpg never beat 36 mpg. That's why I have trouble believing anyone who claims they're getting 42-45 mpg with a Clubman. It sounds fishy. I bet they're averaging about 38 but I don't think they hit 40.

That just doesn't sound right. I got 41 mpg on my last tank, it was mostly interstate at 65-70 mph, plus some curvy back roads on an unplanned detour . Granted, that's just one tank and there's some room for error, but I can't see how you couldn't beat 36 by hypermiling. Heck, my 93 Escort could get 35 mpg doing 70, I can't believe the Mini can barely match that.
I just did 2500 miles to LV and back from Oregon. Highway all the way, essentially. Best I managed (manually calculated) was 35.0 on two tanks. Worst was 27. That included some mountains and 80-100 speeds. Other tanks were 28 and 32. Trip avg (computer) was 66.8 mpg and 32.x MPG.
Some do get better than others. Just as they don't all have the exact same HP. Why? Who knows. There are several people on the board who have claimed over 40mpg hand calculated on a tank of gas. It just sounds like you don't have one of the better gas mileage ones.
I've gotten as high as 34 on my 07 S model in 75% highway driving on a tank. I've heard of other S models getting 38 on pure highway. I've also heard of people having a tough time getting 30+ in mixed driving.

Our 2009 MC Auto has 7,500 miles on it..... Wife drives it, and with no hypermiling skills whatsoever.
The avg MPG readout has hovered around 35.7-35.9 mpg every single week for its life. We never reset it (not even sure how?) She drives 50 miles round trip, with 70/30 mix of highway (65mph) and suburban/urban roads. Long trips average 43 mpg on highway.
These numbers also agree with what I calculate from the pump.
Of course, the speedo is off, so maybe the odometer is too?
*** Also, I wouldnt be surprised to see the automatics getting better MPG's. These days, its not uncommon.
