DON'T TRY THIS AT HOM,E, KIDS! LEAVE IT TO US PROFESSIONALS!
I inadvertently left my key in a pants pocket for a trip through the washer - but hey, it's used to handling the G-forces, right! Seems to have survived the dunking with no ill effect, but I do not care to intentionally repeat the test.
I had the same thing happen and the key worked for a couple of weeks and then stopped. It must have rusted out the insides is my guess. I can still drive the car with it in the dash but that's all.

May have killed the battery (replaceable on the Comfort Access key - CR2032, I think).
