Drove from Bowie, Md to Smithfield, Va on Saturday to play at a Golf Channel Amateur event (if you like golf check it out!) , 210 miles each way. Weather was promising since there was a huge snow storm in our area at the beginning of the week and temps in the single digits Tuesday and Wednesday. Saturday was going to be great with almost 80's in Smithfield!
The drive: left at 5:00am from Bowie, Md, drove down 301S, to 17S. Roads in great shape, some mist moisture on roads from the dramatic changes in temps. Snow was still evident on side of roads, and melt was coming across in some spots.
MPG going down was 34.5 and that was not "grandma" driving. Noticed when I got to the golf course the BARN doors where the only dirty part of the car, brownish caked on road spray stuff. Arrived in Smithfield at 8:30am.
RETURN: same 210 miles - MUCH Heavier traffic - hey it was 80 degrees after all! MUCH more Left Lane Hangers (its like a slow lane now, VA folks must be trained to ride in ONLY the Left Lane no matter how slow they are!).
Got the exact same mileage - 34.5. NOTICED that when the temps go up the Run Flats get really smooth riding, first time I noticed that - VERY SMOOTH ride. I now have 13,000miles on my MCCS - still need to get Sunroof fixed (waiting for warmer weather). No othe issues - FAST, FUN, and Great looking (the car).
Unfortunately, I don't get much long distance driving in my Clubman S. I get around 26mpg around town, which does include 15 mile freeway commutes. (Just long enough to warm it up.)
On a couple of trips from San Diego to LA (120 miles) I did get MPG consistent with this, about 35-36mpg.
Mine has done about 13,500 miles and I just got back from a return trip to Seattle this weekend. I drove 485km and still have 375k left in the tank according to the trip computer.
I get right around 26-28 now that its winter, mixed about 50/50 highway city. Recently drove from Buffalo to Rochester and averaged about 35mpg....average speed was about 63 from start to end. I'm only at 7k miles though.
Speaking of warm up time...i get this terribly annoying clicking sound when i apply the accelerator (MT) whether I'm in gear or not. I didn't notice it when I first got the car at all, but now its annoying as all heck . Doesn't sound like fuel injectors to me either....
Little Bean has only around 5 k on him. My commute daily is 2.75 to hgwy, then 16 miles hgwy to office. So that trip everyday and a few little side ones give me an avg of 28.5--29.3 mpg all the time. Have not taken any realy road trips.
Great to see that there are other Clubbies with 10K+ miles on them. I have accumulated 14KMiles of happy motoring since last July. My mileage varies between 39mpg and 42.5mpg. (530 to 580 miles on a tank.) 50% country roads and 50% in town. (Real mumbers, not Computer.)

Only a bit over 7k on mine, was averaging over 31 in the summer, but with winter, my average has dropped to 28.5, with i'd say 70/30 city/highway driving.

Whoa, that's pretty amazing. Do you happen to have 15 or 16" wheels? No scientific proof, but I feel like my mileage was better when I had 15's vs my current 17's. But I only had the 15's for the 1st 2 weeks of my car's life.
So what am I doing wrong? I am not racing the Bean, actually trying to drive conservatively. Am I shifting to soon and thus working the engine harder? Rarely .... shift above 3000 rpm. Again, my commute with no traffic totals 35 miles per day at 90 % highway at 64--74 mph and a jump around the neighborhood here and there, etc.

No surprise. More weight and more outside rotating mass= worse acceleration, braking, and as a result, fuel economy. Put 1 lb on a 6 inch string and spin it around. Now put 1.5 lbs on a 12 inch string- it's harder to rotate! I did a basic search when I started and found the stock S 16" wheels weighed in at around 17 lbs, and OEM 17" wheels weigh in between 20 and 22 depending on the style! And since theyr'e bigger, that weight is farther out on the wheel, more weight to spin.
That's why i'm torn between some really good looking wheels that i'm unsure of weight, or buying some Enkei RPF-1's that I like but aren't the "best look" that weigh 14.6 lbs (2.4 lbs lighter than 16's!) for 17x7's!!!

Do you have an S or a justa? I set it in D and often cruise control. I anticipate holdups on my route, like lights, and coast to them (not using gas), and do gradual starts. If you find yourself fluctuating at speeds like that, you may be changing lanes or finding yourself encountering slower drivers and passing them. I usually sit in the right or 2nd right lane and just punch in a speed and just relax. Trip computer says I get anywhere between 33-43 mpg doing that. Which is inflated, but still....think of it!
I've given up on being an aggressive driver, and am just passive. Go the speed limit in a lane that no one will get mad about it, and touch the brake as little as possible- braking early and coasting is key! I save the gas burning fun stuff for conditions that permit it

15", but I'm about to install a set of 18's So I guess I can kiss my good numbers goodbye.
(I usually keep the tire press. around 2psi higher than recommended, and so far the tires show no unusual wear. )

I'm only at 3600 miles and getting 33.5 mpg calculated (the OBC says 34.5) with a mix of motorway driving and slow & go on the back roads here in East Anglia. Slow is 25-30 mph through villages and when caught behind the farm vehicles and excessively cautious drivers (ECDs) who seem to time their trips on A roads for "rush hour." Go is 60 on most roads and 70ish on the motorways when not obstructed by slow trucks Lots of twists & turns to give the Getrag a workout!

2000 miles in 1 week - mostly I95. Averaged 35 driving with traffic!

This was from a drive to the beach this weekend in my "S", yes my "S". 24 miles from the gas station to our destination with an indicated avg of 45.7MPG.
It's a new best for me. I usually get 36-37 over the entire tank with 80% conservative driving and 20% of the fun stuff. However, I don't deal with much traffic where I live.
This is what I truly love about the S. Power when you want it, economy when you don't. It's all about what you do with that right foot.
Cooper S,13k I drove from NY to Dayton Ohio and back. All highway driving, set cruise on 73mph .On the way down the obc said 35.2 and on the back I got 36.4 . I also kept track on paper and the obc was on the money. This was also with the AC on. I cant complain. Has for city milage I dont really care because I bought an S to have fun. Happy motoring CJ
