Last night I went to a preview of the NY auto show at Javits. I sat in a Modena 360, a Vanquish, and many others - it was incredible.
Anyway, mini had a great display (and many interested 'business types'). They had an orange and a BRG cabrio (both MC). After showing my father, he was instantly in love. Today we went to the dealer and put down a $500 deposit on the MCS cabrio. We are 5 or 6 on the waiting list at the dealer, and possibly the first on the MCS.
It looks like my family will soon join the ranks of the other two mini families on NAM. I hope to be able to take my mom to some mini meets by October.
The dealer had very little information on the cabrio. On the receit for the down payment, they wrote 'price=msrp'. The dealer was assuming that the cabrio was going to be anywhere from $2k-$4k more than their hardtop counterparts, probably based on the BMW lines.
We were also unable to configure any of the options, even color. The dealer said that they will have a model in the showroom by August, and that is probably around the same time that we will be able to specify our order. Hopefully, it will be sitting in the garage by October.
I would expect the cabrio option to be $2000+ more plus-
more weight to the car due to reinforcement of the body from loss of the roof and from the motors and brackets for the top.
So the question is with the added weight how will the 115 HP MC do compared to the 163HP MCS in cabrio form?
Time to do a test drive before ordering I would think.
Too bad we have to wait for the first cabrios to arrive

From what I read in that article, the Cabrio will be more like $5K over the non-Cabrio MINIs.
$5k would make more sense. That's the usual price difference for convertible cars in the $20k range.

While I certainly understand these concerns, we will have an oppurtunity to test drive the car before delivery. If the cabrio provides a substantially different driving experience than my MCS and we are unhappy with, I am very confident we will be able to sell our place on the waiting list (considdering it will be one of the first MCS cabrios on the road in the US).
The first 16" of the convertible top rolls back like old sunroofs.
"The MINI Convertible soft top incorporates a "sunroof" feature unheard of in the segment. The first 16 inches of the soft top slides open and closed along the top rails just like a sunroof and can be operated at speeds of up to 75 miles-per-hour. Leave it to MINI to give "motorers" a choice of how they want to experience the elements."

Yeah 5k over will be closer I'm sure. However in the past BMW/MINI would throw out a rather high figure and then beat it by a thousand or so. They've done this with countless BMWs and both the MC and MCS when they first came to the states.
Anyone want to provide some color advice for the cabio? Keep in mind, it will be sharing a garage with a EB/W MCS hardtop.
I'm a big fan of British Racing Green on the Cabrio, since they're offering a green top. I saw a pic of a BRG MC with a green top, and the Cordoba Beige interior. It looked great! Maybe I can find it.
Love the sunroof option - innovative!
But am I the only one who thinks the antenna just looks.... wrong?

I too don't love the antenna placement...that was my one dislike about the car before putting down the deposit.
When I went to the car show, I checked to make sure that the anenna easily screwed off (don't worry, I didn't keep it... ). I will be replacing the antenna with a shorty...hopefully very short. Maybe someone will even produce a sort of "stub" to screw into place there? I never listen to the radio, anyway.
