Alrighty guys, I'm going to need some MC40 help and love...
I've been in the market for an R53 to put a spare engine that I have kicking around into, and I've stumbled upon one that needs a significant amount of work, but it has
244,000 MILES - that's like 400,000 KMS
holey crap!
Now I've been looking for a restoration project - but this may be a bit much. It needs probably 2-4K of work (that I'll do myself along with the engine):
Let me know your thoughts if this is worth restoring or not.
Also, what's all of your takes on modifying an MC40?
If I restore it - would it be heresy to do something like this (a winter rally conversion?)

Save the MC40, and bring it back to life.
1. Clutch - http://www.ecstuning.com/Mini-2004-Cooper-R53-S-Coupe-L4_1.6L_W11B16A/Drivetrain/Clutch/ check you month / year. Valeo Dual mass to single mass is very poplular. ES2010305
2. Has AC issues - Check Pump ( mostly the clutch ) then cabi fiber and AC control, also make sure its charged. Have a AC shop check it.
3. PS pump (possibly get this via recall) - maybe you might have to bring it to a US dealership.
4. struts & alignment - Check 2004 suspesnion. Looks like not the sport suspesnion , check the part number on the struts. 11 digit. Also if it was upgraded to JCW suspension with the red springs. Some people did that.
5. has a significant dent in the boot - Some Dent guys can pull those out, if really big then body work.
6. other minor issues - let me know what you need/.

Thanks ECS, you're always on the ball.
While we're throwing part numbers out there, how about the MC40's extra fog lights (missing on this one currently)
I've heard back from the seller, they can't find the number plate.
I'm quite capable of fabricating reproduction plates, but has anyone figured out a way to check/verify the actual number to use on the plate? From what I've read in the last hour or so, I may be out of luck with that one.

Awesome.
MINI NLA the old kit. But we found the parts and made a new one. Everything except those install instructions, linked below. . Do you need the whole kit are just the lamps are missing ?

Here is the install PDF CLICK HERE
63170412647 H3 blue bulb: if needed for blue bulbs. These were rare but MINI wanted them to match the xenons.
http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/SiteSearch/63170412647/
61120412968 if needed for center armrest switch conversion. To move the switch from under the panel to the center console blank. Also Rare.
http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/SiteSearch/61120412968/
MC40 parts: Get them while they are still around. most have gone NLA.

Its hard to find, Call MINIUSA ( worth a shot ), or check the glove box w/ papers, under the seat, in the boot tool kit. Those are places to check it was in the center console, go back a couple pages to see pics of location were it should be. .
Thanks

well this may end quickly...
To import the car, the driving lights may need to be retrofitted (getting a price right now but it's not looking good) and a $500 recall clearance letter from Mini Canada will be needed.
I'll post what they say, but I'm pretty sure this is dead in the water already.

Car was a US Edition. Only sold in the US. First one went to do the UK though. I asked Paddy Hopkirk if he has it but he said no. He had io idea there was even one in the UK. I imported mine into Canadoa in 2006. It has 15,000 miles on it. I drive it in the summer. Barely. It had 13,000 miles on it in 2006. So I have put 2,000 miles on it in 8 years. Love the car. Put the JCW kit on it from the dealer in late 2006. Worth it.

Good luck on whatever you decide, they are hard to find, some pop up time to time.
Rorie - Very nice MC40. Glad you still have it in Canada, that's rare.

Personally, if it is because you really like the look then yes. But as an "investment", no.
#267
Yeah, I bought it to boot the kids around and as a toy. But then I have moved a few times, spent a lot of time renovating a house, and so I have not had much time to drive and enjoy. I only drive in the summer. Not the winter.
Thanks

Well it looks like I'll be picking up another MC40 tomorrow, as far as I can tell it is missing the MC40 plaque, but I won't know for sure until I get into it and check all the nooks and crannies looking for it. The car has a few miles, 224K or so but what the hell right?
It will no doubt be a challenge to bring it up to snuff, like banging out the dent in the hatch under the Cooper S logos.
I'll post photos as the project comes along...

That was the one I was looking at (and decided to pass on for importing costs)
Make sure to get that driver side front tire patched it was flat in the photos.
I'd also probably replace the shifter and add the fog lights.
Good luck restoring it! Happy Motoring.

2004 R53 MINI Cooper S MC40 #24
Found the Plaque... hidden away with the vehicle Documents, they put newerish tires on it, but I don't think they worried about the TPMS, that light never went off during the drive back, however just about every other light came on and off, looks like I have my work cut out for me, OK and the poor guy at the local shop I turn to for things I don't want to do... like replacing the clutch.
Engine runs strong with no noise, car body in great shape with the exception on one dent I think that can be popped out.
The decals are all sun faded, not to fret, I'll order another set, I'll replace the worn shifter **** and the steering wheel eventfully. I'll order the Driving Lights and it needs a replacement Fog Light. A few standard leaks to sort out, but looking forward to hitting the twistiness with it and it's younger brother.
But for now, it is sitting at the shop for a full inspection and cleanup.
Time to order some parts...

"Found the Plaque... hidden away with the vehicle Documents, "
Now that's a find!
You have the other parts linked above.
TPMS - reads off the wheel speed sensor, not the inboard( wheel mounted ) sensor like the 2009+ MINIs. Just reset the button in the console and check the time pressure. Then GTG.
