I remember several threads on NAM a few years ago on this mod. It's done by cracking open the speedo and tach units and replacing the LEDs on the circuit boards with blue LEDs. It takes a bit of soldering experience and cohones to pull it of, but it is a dramatic change (and a great look in blue... very nice).

A couple of links that came up from a search on "LED tach speedo" (definately not a comprehensive list, but it should give you a good start)

Wow, 15 pages long, thanks for all the hits!

I got a wild hair today, did something similar to what got this thread started.............

First, take dental floss, and wrap around any stick you can find. Then saw through the foam tape behind the letters, preferably across the shortest distance.

Cut off the C too. Step back, and say "What the hell have I done? That looks like crap!" Find sample polish from AMVIV or Mini Meet West to blend in latest wax job and letter shadows.

Had to go to NAPA for correct tape. Bare Metal foil for covering cut spots. Super glued cut R from last car and C to make D.
Sooper Dooper dorky cheapskate modification.

Good How-to!

I was inspired by the first post in this thread also.

I've never named a car before, but I started referring to my car as, "The MINI Pooper"

I got another Cooper badge at my dealer and exchanged my car's "C" with the new "P".

I lined the letter up using a couple pieces of masking tape, so it would be on the same line. Here is the result:

I tapped into the footwell lights. The small light pods I used are LED so not much additional load.

I needed surf racks, but I didn't feel like dishing out a couple hundred dollars for some, so I manufactured my own for around $50. Regular soft surf racks wouldn't work because, as you know, in Coopers, only our front windows roll down.

I bought 4 soft racks and some extra strap in length. I connected the back rack to the middle by sewing extra strap to it, and running the slack through the hatch and tying it down inside.

The first and middle rack go through the window, as usual with soft racks. (normally you would only use two, and the first rack would go through the front windows, and the second rack would go through the back window.)

Voila! The rack work perfectly; the board does not move around at all. They are also easily removable and will only be on the car when I am carrying a board.

As thread starter, I have to say this can't really qualify. Surfers are cool, and not dorky.

BTW: your last picture is well done, the lighting is perfect.

Haha I thought it would qualify on the "cheapskate" end of the spectrum. And thanks!

Hope this qualifies as cheap (less than $5.00) and dorky (reinforces the fun toy car image)...

Added a US flag antenna ball to my stock wire.

Cheers...

This is a wonderful, nice old thread - it's just a shame how many old pics no longer show up.

I needed a speed nut to get going, but found out I didn't have anything laying around the tool box.... Enter beer bottle cap, punch, oh and the full bottle it came from! One small hole in the center and the sheet metal screw did the rest! And with a speed nut that size, no washer required!
