$618 lol....
Apparently I'm going to be forced to pick up a tool! lol
Did you replace the fan yourself?
Someone in southeast PA come help me! I'll pay you to fix my baby lol

Thanks man!
Easy is a relative term for such a noob as me though. I guess I was the wrong kind of guy to buy this car if I don't feel comfortale getting my hands dirty! lol

On a positive note, everyone has commented on what a great mini it is. They love the wilwoods, alcantra, and overall condition of the car.

I guess I need to start over again and shop around on who can give me the best deal on this latest fix

Heres a write up on how to do it. Check it out and see if you think it's something you can handle.

It's pretty helpful to be able to work on any used car but yeah, I don't think I would still have my Mini if I couldn't do all the repairs myself. I really like it, but all the little stuff can add up fast as you are finding out.

I just replaced my fan with a non-OEM unit.

The low-speed resistor is a very common issue.

You did it yourself? If so, wanna help a guy out and teach me a few tricks of the trade. We're literally next door to each other. Throw in a few beers and a few bucks to make it worth your time????

I ended up just paying to have it done - to replace the fan requires putting the car into service mode, and I just didn't have the time to do it myself (normally I would, though) before I did MINIs on the Dragon last year.

No problem.
I may have found someone who can do such jobs on the side and they are well versed with Mini.

They are recommending I try the resistor first before a whole new fan assembly. What is the consensus of the group???

Resistor first or just go with a new fan assembly/resistor?

It just needs to work. Have the guy do the resistor and save a few bucks.

Sounds like a plan to me!
I just thought I'd ask b/c every time I cheap out on something to save a buck, it ends up costing me more in the end

I'm just happy I may have found a guy relatively local who can help me out

Considering the fan isn't all that more expensive, and it's not easy to get to, and if you're pulling everything apart...

I'm more inclined to say just replace the fan and be done with it.

Just got on.

Yeah, John sent me a message as well when he saw you and I had been talking.

I bought the TYC fan off of Rockauto: http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo....432681&jsn=296

I did a bunch of reading prior to buying, seems quite a few people have had nothing but good luck with the TYC unit.

And that's all that is needed? The reference unit comes with the fan (obviously) and new resistor--if I understand the assembly and repair job

Yep. New fan is the whole kit and kaboodle, better resistor and all.

The OEM fans will just fail again, better to go aftermarket in this case.

Kief, have been following your thread for sometime and would like to share a quote that was in the front of my calculus book many years ago: "What one fool can do, so can another". For years, it has motivated me to do most of my own work. Just look at all the great information that has been shared by so many on this forum. Doing your own preventative maintenance and repairs will save you money and instill even greater pride in your MINI ownership:

Thanks. Maybe I'll get there!
It's going to take some time, but I did just complete my first DIY cosmetic exterior modifications with some plastidip Haha. I also touched up the numerous rock chips. Baby steps...baby steps LOL

Before and after pics. Previous owner didn't install the lower aero bumper and I didn't like the chrome look or the white lettering on the PIAA.
Don't worry, I made sure to cover up all the inlets so plastidip didn't get everywhere.

You don't need an aero bumper for the lower grille.

Now you tell me! Could have saved me about 102,000 brain cells breathing that crap in!!! And only $50 bucks! I could have sworn John told me I would need the whole kit.

Oh well, at least if it doesn't hold up, I know where to find the part.

The dip will peel over time, and you've still got mismatching grilles.

I'd just do it.

Yeah, but that $50 can go in the fix-it jar for my upcoming fan repair! LOL

Here is the fine print on using the factory Aero lower grille piece on a standard bumper:

The lower piece requires modification to the grill (which all said and done is about a 1.5 hour job), so it fits the stock Cooper or Cooper S bumper. The lower grill was designed to fit the Aero Front bumper which has completely different geometry where the grill insets into the bumper but it can be modified to fit. Why MINI chose to make it so different between the two bumpers is beyond me, but that is how it is.
I think your mod looks good and it works.

Just want to clarify before I buy, my Stage 1 Cooling Fan is inoperable. Do I want the TYC one you bought or the APDI/PRO "single fan replacement?" $61.89 or $76.79?
