New Getrag 5-speed tranny on 2005 Cooper: Any reviews?

It's is a new vendor this year (Getrag), and I am curious how it compares to the old Midlands 5-speed that has been installed since 2002 in the base 5-speed Cooper. It should be a great improvement in durability/reliability from what I have heard. Curious how the shifter "feels" on the new model.

"A new five-speed 'Getrag' gearbox with modified gear ratios will feature in all MINI One and MINI Cooper models. The modification results in improved acceleration for both models. The MINI One now accelerates in fourth gear from 50-75mph in 11.9 seconds (previously 12.8 seconds)."

Just took delivery of my 05 on Saturday and after putting around 200 miles through the new Getrag I am extremely happy with the gearbox. It has a relatively short throw, but one has to be careful not to downshift into too low of a gear(5th to 6th shift can end up to 5th to 4th pretty easily).

To solve that problem I backhand all shifts going into 6th to make sure I am *pushing* the shifter into 6th gear. Havn't hit 4th by accident yet.

The new ratios are pretty close, so expect to be shifting the car quite rapidly(50 in 5th seems natural, and 50 in 4th almost seems to be near break-in no no land).

Love the car,

Peter

Correct me if I am wrong... but the 6-speed did not change from '04 to '05 ... only the Cooper 5-Speed.

Ok, I'll correct you! The 6-speed also changed. THey shortened 2nd and 3rd gears slightly for better 0-60 times. Speltzer, in this thread however, was asking specifically about the Cooper, not the S.

Want your MINI to run like a high-end sports car? 19% pulley and GIAC with larger injectors is all you need...BTW, 111,111 miles as of 2/2/08

As an '04 Cooper owner, I'm anxious to hear also.

However, I think the current 5 Speed often gets a bad rap. I love mine. It has a great feel...smooth & precise.

I know they lowered the gearing slightly on the 2005 MCS 6-speed, but was curious about the brand new Getrag 5-speed tranny in the base $16,995
Cooper.

Is the 6-speed a new transmission or is it just with updated ratios?

I triple that thought!! I love the 03 5 speed, but I think one thing people have been hoping for is for more durability in horsepower upgrades. That is, with the new Getrag, many people have assumed it can handle more horsepower increases than the old Midlands. Is the Cooper still 5 speed or did it get an extra gear?

Now wipe that silly grin off your face and REPORT!!!

Yes, the Cooper is still a 5-speed.

Hello '05 Cooper owners!!!.............oh well, I guess they'll report in after they get back from motoring in those new MINIs. Can't blame them, really, can we.......and that does say something positive about the gearbox maybe?!?!?!

Me too![/QUOTE] Also me.I love the feel, and really like how tall 2nd and third are.
My tech at the dealer tells me that if they fail it's because of a seal at the trans axle.Seems to be a cold weather issue for the most part.
Look for oil under the car about in line with the bonnet release up front. If you see something, the dealer can probably fix the seal before you run the tranny dry.Pay attention to your car, don,t just point it down the road.
