Need help opening 2004 CVT
Hi, I'm trying to rebuild my cvt and after many precise steps of disassembly I need to separate the cases. Apparently the shift lever shaft does'nt want to go in thru the upper (for me) case. See photos. I removed the Inside stopper and the linkage that goes further in the tranny. When I hammer it gently (I wrote gently) I feel that it stops hitting steel on steel. On the photo we can see that the huge differential gear is still in the upper case. Is it because of that why I can't push in the shift lever shaft?

I rebuilt mine almost 2 years ago. I don't think that's what keeping them from coming apart. The brass piece with the allen bolt that is under the wires maybe you problem. In the assembly video that brass fork its called torque sensor. Its installed after the cases are together. So it needs removed before they will come apart.I bought the assembly video from Europeantransmissions.com

at 1:42 we can clearly see the shaft of the shifter that has been pulled in a lot. In mine it is realy my problem. Everything wants to follow except this shaft. Like I wrote if I hammer gently it goes then I fell it's steel on steel and of course I can't separate the case more :(
I don't know why cause it does'nt seem like it's linked to enything else! Is the big diff gear that we see on my pix is suppose to stay in the upper (for me) case? I tought that maybe there is something linked to the shaft I try to pull is linked there.

At 2:10 on the video the guy is messing with the torque sensor rod. That needs to come out. Did you take the 2 large nuts off the the shafts? Ones behind a cover with 4 bolts and the other is behind a round cover about 6" in diameter. I have the assembly video. My cvt was in pieces when I bought the car. I'm pretty sure the shift lever has nothing to do with the cases not coming apart. It should just push right out you may need to turn it one way or the other.

Yes the 2 large nuts have been removed. I did try to turn the shift lever one way or another while pushing and it does'nt want to get out.
I'll work again on it tonight and post a photo of my case turned upside down or downside up !!
I'll also remove the brass thing you are talking about.

I got it
The shifter shaft/lever was realy the problem. What I had to do was simply to remove it before attempting any case separation. I also learned that the 2 huge nuts did'nt had to be removed.
Next step and probably the last that will bug me is to take out the secondary pulley assy. The primary seems to be easy to take out but the secondary moves with it's bearing but looks like stuck in it's bearing.
I have no particles of anything in the tranny I would like to change the belt, bearings (primary sounds realy bad) and probably the friction discs.
Can hou help me with how to take out the primary pulley/shaft assy pleeeaaase?

The insides are very clean on yours. Mine had a blown belt. Strange how the shaft kept the cases together. Must have been binding them up. If I remember right I had to replace both those bearings. They didn't feel very good. I just went to a local bearing shop for them. Use a socket the same size as the secondary shaft and tap it out.

Because if I remember right there is a pitot tube behind there that will be in the way of the primary shaft if its not turned.

I was planning to go to a local shop too for new bearings. I'll try to change as many as possible. The ones of secondary clutch shaft look good but the ones of the primary make noise. That was the problem of my tranny. Everything was going well but the tranny was noisy when moving. The problem should have been the secondary shaft should'nt it? Anyway I'm not done checking everything.
Did you change your friction discs?

ok, so I've been working on getting mine back together the last few days after replacing the belt. I had the same issue with the lever binding when I attempted to split the case.
I'm very close to buttoning it up but have an issue that's been troubling me all day. I'm following the video below for installing the valve body and it's just not working, the lever binds when I tighten down the valve body.
Any tricks to get it springing back after tightening bolts? I still don't understand how it works the way they're explaining it in the vid.

Hey Dazz, while you wait for help I have a question if you don't mind. Did you rebuild because the car stopped and the belt fell apart Inside or you rebuilt because it was noisy like in my case? I'm in it right now and beside the outside bearing of the primary clutch shaft that is due to be changed I found no evidence of anything that could cause the noise. Most of all the noise was heard only when the car was moving. I would have tought of something relied to the secondary clutch not primary ???? It would be perfect if someone would have experiment the same thing but...

Mine was exactly the opposite, no noise, just stopped moving while driving, almost like every gear was neutral. I was expecting it to happen soon though, the car has 185k miles on it.
The only noise I heard is when I pulled the transmission last week, it sounded like I had won a jackpot on a slot machine!
Here is what I found when I opened it:
That magnet was working overtime!
And it took a bit of unraveling to remove the twisted bands
And here are what is left after thoroughly blending in the mixer! Only found 4 or 5 of these that had been split in half, probably the ones that chipped a gear in a few places.
The only noise I heard is when I pulled the transmission last week, it sounded like I had won a jackpot on a slot machine!
