R50 Transmission Rebuild... Not a MIDLAND TRANNY??!
So I've got my Midland transmission out of my r50 Cooper thinking that I could rebuild it according to the rover breakdown but when I looked at the serial numbers they do not correspond with Midlands transmission serials. Has anyone run into this issue? Is that the serial number, doesn't look like this is a Midland tranny? I bought this used I may be the second owner. Any thoughts?

Notice how the second marking pen line on the case of the transmission looks a little different? I just put in a rebuilt unit about two weeks ago and noticed that the second line looked different and newer than the first line. I'm thinking that yours may have been rebuilt once already although the differences you describe would be out of the scope of a normal rebuild.
My old one (definitely never been rebuilt) is still down in the garage. I will look at it and see what the marking pen lines look like on that one. I'm just guessing about the second line and that it means that it has been rebuilt once already.

Thanks for the input Val. I was thinking along those lines, as I could tell there had been noticeable work in that area (ie heat shield missing a screw, markings on bolts where they had been turned before). I've been telling myself that, your second opinion pretty much reassures me of that.
Thank you sir,

Also, everyone notes that it's the bearings that go bad, in this case that single gear is eaten up in that one spot... Hmm, there wasn't much debris in the case except where this gear grinded off... Stumped. Everything is still like new and great condition? Hopefully I'll get this bad boy back together before Monday.
