EBC vs. Akebono - EBC wins

Felt like I should share this story. Got some awesome customer service from EBC today.

A year or so ago, put some Abebono brake pads on the wife's subaru. They were supposed to be the OEM vendor, but they squealed like a stuck pig. Had my mechanic check everything, he couldn't find a problem. He cleaned and re-lubed them just in case. Nope. Contacted Akebono and they told me I would have to mail the pads in for inspection. I did, which was expensive and required that I buy new pads so her car wasn't immobile. Followed up and followed up and got a couple of "we are looking into it" and then silence. Nada. Not my old pads back, not new pads, not a refund. $%!$.

Fast forward...

Put new rotors and new EBC red pads on my R53 in the spring. With about 1500 miles on them, one of the pads shed about 1/4 of its material. (and no, I wasn't abusing them - I was still breaking in a rebuilt engine). You could see from the weird pattern on the rotor that something was wrong.

Very worried after getting burned by Akebono, but tried anyway.
Contacted EBC and they asked for a photo, which I sent. Today brand new replacement pads arrived -- and, what I wasn't expecting - with two new EBC rotors !!

Rock on EBC!! Thanks for standing behind your product and customer.

Did you relube the calipers when doing the brakes? It seems like you have excessive brake issues.

I've used akebonos with great success, maybe another issue was present. These pads have been proven to be great and noise free.

I'm curious about how to lube the caliper, I've never heard of doing that, I've alway just put the anti-squeal grease where the pads contact the calipers. Should I be doing more?

Lubing them is THE MOST BASIC PART of ANY proper brake job...part of it kinda depends on the design of the caliper...if the "pucks" are on one or both sides..
Failing at clean and relube the caliper is something you can SOMETIMES get away with...but if the caliper sticks, you get uneven padwear, and just wasted your $$.
It takes about 3 minutes too do...and maybe ¢50 of grease....
