Fitting an r53 steering wheel on a 1974 Morris

Hi guys, it's been forever since I've logged in (3 years probably). I sold my r50, bought a Lotus Elise, valet wrecked it, and now I'm in a 1974 Morris Mini that I picked up yesterday. I'm planning on doing a bit of a resto-mod, so I'm fitting seats from an r56 and planning on buying a button-less steering wheel from an r53 to fit onto it. I'm looking for where to find an airbag cover (just the plastic cover with the MINI logo). The airbag assemblies are over $200 and I just need the plastic cover for it. I'm planning on rigging up the cover so I can press it for the horn. The wooden steering wheel is too thin for me and want something different anyway

Is there a separate part # for this piece or it is only available attached to the airbag?

Here's the for sale ad which has the whole story. A valet drove a golf cart into the back

Let me know when you are done and if you would like to sell the Morris steering wheel. And yeah, fire the valet...

Maybe it's just me, but part of the charm of having an old MINI is just that.

You might have some luck searching on www.car-part.com for that individual piece without the module. Otherwise, doing some searching on real OEM I am only seeing this part included with the air bag module, part # 32-30-6-779-258. Real OEM didn't show a separate part number so I am not sure you can get it.

agree

except that an old MINI is a 2002

an old Mini on the other hand

there are a BUNCH of "old style" steering wheels that would be WAY easier to mount on a Mini, and finding a thicker diameter grip is not a problem. A classic "hot rod" look would be to go to a smaller diameter . . .

BUT it is your car so do what YOU like my friend . . .

I would go with the Classic steering wheels , really like the wooden ones. But whatever you choose.

No separate part for the airbag cover itself. You might have to make something custom from the old of an old airbag.

Good luck.
