power steering pump finally died

Well for years, my power steering pump would stop working, and I would pull over and turn off the car and it would reset. I would be good for a month or so. Last month it wouldn't turn off. And after a few cycles it seemed fine. Today, I drove to work, parked and when I left it was dead. No fuses blown, no relays are shot. The pump is finally gone. I guess I should be happy I got 12 years and 233k miles out of it. Not happy I have to spend $600.

The power steering pump on the MINI is one of those items that seems to have a bad reputation, but that is a long time you got out of that pump. Very impressive. Unfortunately, the power steering pump is an expensive part alone. Do you plane on doing the DIY? If so, this tech article here should be helpful. Good luck with the replacement.

I wound up buying a new pump. No core. It took me 1.5 hrs to install. Getting the pump out was fine and the install was fine. Not difficult at all. I plan to rebuild my old pump and put it back on my shelf. Is there a way to bench test?

+1 there was an extension on the warranty on the PS pump 32416778425 and fan 32416857718 . 2002-about 2005 model year.

Also a great time to check and change out those P/S lines.

Here all the info:

13 years/150,000 miles extended coverage period.

233,000 miles I would say you got your money's worth...

(I had my MC40#211 done at 11 years and 144,000 miles).

Motor on!

Not to crap on your thread, but I have my used pump for sale if you want it. Significantly less than $600 for sure.

Whats all involved for rebuilding it?

Just some seals or is there a kit?
