Rear hatch excessive heat?

So I've noticed something as of recent, and it's that after running my Mini for more than 15-20 minutes, the rear hatch release gets scolding hot.

Anyone run into this problem? Electrical issues? Or maybe the license plate light is shorting?

Either way the hatch release gets as hot as my car is red.

Check those bulbs or the housing, possible the rear grip electrical are shorting, It can get hot around the rear two lights if they are the standard festoon halogen bulbs.
