Removing stock R50 spoiler

With Spring in the air, it is time for a warm weather exterior project. I am planning to remove the stock spoiler on Dougal and get the roof (around the sunroof) painted Chili Red like the rest of the car.

I know the process for removing the spoiler.

However, I've never done any body work; but I'd like to tackle filling and prepping the roof myself before I paint it.

Any recommended products or tips to fill the holes? I'm concerned as the holes are so small that whatever I use could simply pop out at some point.

Is there some sort of backing material that is used on the inside?

Weld it and grind it...or find some paintable plugs that can be sealed.
