Another power steering pump question - Remanf. Dorman Pump issues

Ladies and Gents,

The pump on my 06 Cooper was leaking - so, I purchased a replacement remanufactured pump from parts geek - Dorman Power Steering Pump.

Installed the unit today, started the car - all steers just fine; however the pump makes a pulsating whining sound when the car is simply idling. It is rather annoying. I don't recall my old leaking pump doing that. I do remember hearing whining when turning which from my research is normal as the system is electronic and not powered by the engine.

However, this pulsing whine on idle is killing me… also, the lights appear to flicker slightly with the pulsing whine.

Thoughts? Do you think I got an old model of the remanufactured pump?

Thanks,

Take it back. That surely is defective. Many fires have been known to be caused by our electro-hydraulic pump.
Here's a safe & cheap $50 permanent or temporary option:

Older pumps make more noise than the 2005+ refresh pumps....
BUT...something does not "sound" right...sounds like a bad pump...

Yea, the connection does not sound right or the pump is bad, the newer pumps have less whine. But still have it.

Check the pump and the connection at the top of the pump.

Hey....

I have this same exact problem with my Dorman reman pump. It works totally fine and it has worked fine for the past 9 months though..... I simply ignored it and kept on driving as I didn't have any more time to keep on working with it. 10k miles later it still works fine.

LMK, just probably call Dorman and ask, I think they have a warranty.

Hi folks , I just put in a Dorman reman pump and I'm having the same issue. I've checked the electrical connections and they seem ok, do you think I got a bad pump? Or am I overlooking something? I plan on calling Dorman but they aren't open on weekends.

TIA
Greg

Greg,

The DORMAN pump that was pulsating died and I had it replaced under warranty. I would call them and mention it, also tell them about people who have had the same problems in the forum. They should change it at no charge. Or whoever you bought it from. If I were you I would replace it again. My second pump worked marvelously. Good luck!

R, Manny
