Super charger gears died.

I have an 06 r53 with only 40,000 miles.Never dreamed that the dang charger was out of oil and ate the water pump drive gears.

Does this require a whole supercharger or just the end gears and bearing? Thanks. Jim

Yikes! That's young.

I think you could go either way with the repair and install a new water pump while there.

Installing a new would obviously be quicker than getting a rebuild.

Not to scare you, but I have heard the gears are not available for replacement... You may have to buy a new one. Also if it was out of oil I'd look at charger seals and stuff too. I'm not a mechanic nor have I dug this far into my 05 MCS, but that sounds logical. New = Better than Used.

Rear gear sets are available for purchase as is the rear needle. The seal behind the gear on the slave rotor is the culprit. I have replaced several of these seals and I have yet to find a shaft that is not usable. The seals are a few bucks but you will need to fashion a puller to remove the gear. All in all you will spend $300 to fix with new gears so only you can decide if it makes sense to go the extra and replace the entire unit.

Coolio, you may be correct, the source that I have used before for the drive gear (small) is no longer selling them. The driven gear (large) is still available along with the backing plate but not much use without it mate!

Want a hobo permanent & less worrisome fix? Install an electric waterpump. Supercharger will still work w/o the pump gears.

Well a little update. I have ordered new gears from a gear supplier in the UK. It's ridiculous what the cost the suppliers want for these two gears. 275 for them is robbery.I am a machinist so it was a no brainer as to what I was going to do.
I bought off the self stock gear blanks. Its sad that I couldn't find any in the US tho...total cost with shipping is 57 dollars. I am replacing everything in there.New shaft, drive coupling, bearings ,seals ,water pump, thermostat and housing.Crank position sensor oring.
After all that I'm at the cost of what just the gears were going to cost.

I have came up with a way to check and fill the oil level on this now.It is what mini should have done from the get go.Ill post pics when I get it all together. It's so simple it's ridicules.I will be able to check the oil as fast as you check your engine oil. Also can add that fast!no more dry gears!! Jim

Heres. The pics. Will need to trim tube to length once it's on and I see the room between the radiator and stuff.

No I didn't . I don't see where that end has any problem and it may be able to check it on car.

Got it all back together. Here is my finished product. Just pull cap Off and the measuring stick is in there. Makes it soooo easy now too check and add.

Interesting idea, and very nice finishing/exit.

The "supercharger recharger" (I own one, but is not currently installed on this engine incarnation) is similar in concept, but is more of a hydraulic setup and exits by the airbox.

How does the measuring stick work do you have a marking system on it for the volume?
Did you need to increase the volume of fluid to compensate for the tube?
How do you put more fluid in? The other product uses a vacuum to suck it into the gear chamber.

Thanks again.
The fitting I'd is the same level as the original plug. I added extra oil because I can lol I have about a qtr. inch extra oil in it than factory. The tube is above fitting really and doesn't come into at as far as volumn. I used a piece of weed eater plastici e for a dip stick. I just push it in and it bottoms out. If it is full it will be on the tip.if it doesn't show then you would need to add a little
Bit at a time. It only holds a few tablespoons worth. Ridiculous I think.i can stick my vacumn hand pump hose down the tube to suck out if it's too full but it won't be able to change fluid.the rest is in the cavity in the case.
I added a piece of gas line to the end of the copper tube after I thought about the engine moving when driving. It will give it flex between the engine and core support

Dude, this is the first on NAM. All these years no one has figured a way to add/check the rear fluid w/o removing the SC. Hat off to ya!!!

Did your SC sing the "Rikety Rackety Grind" tune before failure or was it immediate and silent death? My SC is at 66k... I should really remove the SC for inspection.

BTW, would you mind listing the parts & specs you used for this mod?

With all due respect to you (and the OP - sorry) - it's not.
Imperial Mini's MCS Supercharger Recharger system has been on the market (and NAM) for years. Similar in concept, different in execution and expense.
I have one myself (just not installed on my current crate engine whilst I'm under warranty)

jamez -

I stand corrected. Price is steep though. My spare SC (30k) cost me $320 in 2009.

Would anything prevent tapping an engine oil send line into this little gearbox and then running a drain out to the oil pan? I know the oil in the WP gear box is special stuff but I'm guessing its for longevity. I'm at nearly 180K on my MCS that I bought with no service history and this type of thing keeps me up at night.

Interesting, I hadn't seen that before. But $320 seems a bit steep for a piece of tubing and a valve.....
