I agree that it's crazy to have the gas door on the passenger side. Much easier to be where you want to be with the gas pump when the door is on the driver side. Let alone if you needed to back in to the pump because of other cars etc...
One theory I've heard is that if you happen to be at the side of the road adding fuel you would be out of the traffic flow. Since that would only apply to left side driving cars I tend to doubt that.

that has to be the Dumbest reason ever to make you walk to the other side of the car the other 99.9999999% of the time.
must be some American car makers idea; along with NOT including a gas cap holder when you fill your car up. i cant count how many "nice" american cars ive driven that made you lay the gas cap on your paint when adding fuel.
ive not bought cars because of little stuff like that.

That's exactly the reason. BMW would normally put it on the right side because LHD is predominant worldwide. MINI only started on the other side because it originally launched in the UK, and for the years the UK was its biggest market.
